Alabama’s Allen Tabbed 2007 NCBWA/Wilbur Snypp Award Recipient

FROM NCBWA RELEASE
DALLAS – Barry Allen, Assistant Director for Media Relations at the University of Alabama, is the winner of the 33rd annual Wilbur Snypp Award, presented annually by the NCBWA for outstanding contributions to college baseball.

Allen begins his 24th year in the University of Alabama Athletics Media Relations Office and his 19th year as a full-time Assistant Director of Media Relations. Allen is responsible for the overall publicity plan for one of the SEC’s most successful baseball programs. He oversees the day-to-day media operations for the nationally-ranked Crimson Tide baseball program and is responsible for producing the Alabama Baseball Media Guide, game notes, updating statistics and updating the school’s website. Allen also coordinates all interviews requests for head baseball coach Jim Wells, the Crimson Tide’s assistant coaches and the student-athletes.

"Barry Allen is the heart and soul of college baseball," said NCBWA executive director Bo Carter. "There is no harder worker in the business, and his knowledge and love of the game can be seen at every level.”

He has worked closely with the UA baseball program since the 1987 season, where he has worked more than 1,000 games. Allen has been associated with three College World Series teams (1996, 1997 and 1999), two SEC Championships (1996 and 2006) and six SEC Tournament Championships (1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2003) during his baseball tenure. He has also worked 16 SEC Tournaments and 12 NCAA Regionals and served as the NCAA Regional Media Coordinator for the 1996 NCAA South II Regional, the 1997 NCAA South Regional, the 1999 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional and Super Regional, the 2002 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional and 2006 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional and Super Regional.

"Barry is most deserving of this award, said NCBWA Associate Executive Director Russell Anderson. "He does an outstanding job of promoting not only Alabama Baseball, but the entire sport of college baseball."

In 2006, Allen teamed with Greg Seitz, the Media Relations Director at Jacksonville (Ala.) State University, to form the inaugural Alabama Baseball Media Day, sponsored by the Alabama Sportswriters Association. Allen and Seitz coordinated with all 17 Division I and Division II schools in the state of Alabama for a statewide baseball media day held at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., site of the annual SEC Baseball Tournament. The head coach and two players from all 18 schools attended the one-day event, which also featured lunch and a keynote speaker for the highly successful event.

Allen has been associated with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) since the 1998-99 school year, where he has served as Second Vice President (1999), First Vice President (2000) and President (2001). He currently serves on the NCBWA Board of Directors and works closely with the organization’s preseason and post-season All-America teams as well as the Dick Howser Trophy, presented to the collegiate baseball player of the year.

“This is a great honor. I have a deep passion for college baseball and have developed some real friendships over the past 20 years in covering this great sport,” Allen said. “The opportunity to work with many great coaches and student-athletes and to get to know each of them and their families has been very rewarding. It has also be an honor to be associated with the NCBWA and the great work this organization does to promote out national pastime. We have a great leadership in the NCBWA and a strong membership, too. I’d like thank everyone involved for allowing me to play a small role in this organization and to once again say how grateful I am to be recognized in this way.”

Allen attended the University of Alabama, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication and Film in 1989. As a student, he worked in the school’s Media Relations Office, where he worked with the UA baseball team and track and field teams. He also worked a public address announcer for the Alabama women’s basketball and gymnastics and served as the official scorekeeper and public address announcer for the state high school basketball tournament, played annually at Memorial/Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa. He also worked part-time at WNPT Radio in Tuscaloosa, where he hosted a high school football pregame and post-game scoreboard show and worked as play-by-play announcer for various American Legion baseball teams.

A native of Anniston, Ala., Allen attended Saks High School, where he served as head football manager and head baseball manager during his career. He was also the assistant sports editor for the school newspaper and yearbook.

Allen is also involved with several charitable organizations, including Children’s Hospital, United Cerebral Palsy and the American Cancer Society.

Allen is married to the former Carla McLendon and the couple has two daughters, Elle (April 18, 2001) and Annie (April 9, 2003). Allen is an avid baseball fan and sports memorabilia collector. His travels have taken him to more than 300 professional and collegiate baseball stadiums over the last two decades. Allen also collects baseball and football Hall of Fame autographs as well as Heisman Trophy winners.

The Alabama veteran follows a long line of illustrious persons in gaining the award, given in memory of longtime Ohio State Sports Information Director and NCBWA founder, the late Wilbur (Bill) Snypp, since 1975. Snypp was a noted contributor to the writers' organization, which was initiated in 1962 (and celebrating its 46th year in 2007), as well as an officer in the group. The NCBWA/Wilbur Snypp Award annually honors a professional for contributions to the sport of collegiate baseball. Voting is done by a panel of previous winners, who include past NCAA World Series directors, College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame members, decorated media members and others.

NCBWA NAMES PRO-LINE ATHLETIC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 15, today. Arizona State junior outfielder Matt Spencer was named National Hitter of the Week, while Central Connecticut State junior left-hand pitcher Matt Gianini was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I conferences each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Spencer helped lead Arizona State to a huge weekend sweep of conference-rival UCLA. The Morristown, Tenn., native was 9-12 (.750) on the weekend, with a double, a triple, two home runs, seven RBIs, six runs scored and two hit by pitches. He also made two pitching appearances and played stellar defense all weekend, making several highlight reel catches and throwing a runner out at home.

Spencer started the weekend going 4-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored as the Devils erased a 14-7 deficit to claim a 16-14 victory on Friday night. He came up huge on Saturday, homering twice and recording the game-winning hit, a bases loaded walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth that completed another ASU comeback. Sunday his two hits helped ASU once again rally from behind, as he knocked in the tying run in the seventh inning, completing a seven run comeback that ended with an 11-10 Sun Devil victory and the three-game sweep.

Gianini had a dominant effort in CCSU's 13-0 win over Wagner in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. In tossing his second consecutive shutout, the West Haven, Conn., native allowed just three hits and struck out 11 to pick up his third victory of the season. He fanned eight straight Seahawk batters at one point, all swinging, including striking out the side in the fifth and sixth innings. Gianini permitted just one runner to reach second base in the contest. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 15 innings and has struck out 20 while walking just four in his last two starts. In the two shutouts, no opposing runner has reached third base and only two have occupied second base.

With this week's honor, Gianini automatically is named to the watch list for the Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.

NCBWA Players of the Week

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 29, today. UCF senior third baseman Matt Horwath was named National Hitter of the Week, while Tennessee sophomore lefthander James Adkins was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I conferences each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Horwath, the Knights leadoff hitter, had one of the best offensive weeks in UCF history. In four games, he went 11-for-16 for a .688 average, scored eight runs, drove in three, stole a base and had four doubles, a home run and his first two triples of his career. The senior scored twice and had at least two hits in all four games to help the Knights go 4-0 on the week, including a three-game sweep of Tulane, its first-ever sweep of a C-USA series. In Friday night's series opener against Tulane he hit for UCF's first-ever cycle. Horwath was hit by a pitch in the first, singled in the third, tripled in the fourth and homered to lead-off the seventh. He came to the plate with the score tied at 6-6 in the eighth and delivered with a RBI double to complete the cycle and also give UCF a 7-6 win.

Adkins broke the Tennessee school record for strikeouts during a complete-game win at LSU last Friday in which he allowed just three hits and struck out 14 batters. The preseason All-America selection got Jason Lewis to strikeout looking in the bottom of the sixth inning to break former big-leaguer and Vol great R.A. Dickey's school record of 345 strikeouts from 1994-96. Adkins now boasts 350 Ks for his career and has 103 on the season. A junior from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Adkins needed just three pitches for six of his 14 Ks Friday. He allowed only one run while notching his sixth career complete game and his second of 2007.

With this week's honor, Adkins automatically are named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.

NCBWA National Players of the Week

FROM NCBWA RELEASE
DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 24, today. Oakland senior first baseman Ryan Heath was named National Hitter of the Week, while St. John's sophomore left-handed pitcher Scott Barnes was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I conferences each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Heath was 9-25 (.360) with 10 runs scored, two doubles, four home runs and 18 RBI for the week. In Saturday's doubleheader against Western Illinois, he hit a combined 5-7 at the plate with four home runs-including three grand slams-a double, 14 RBI and five runs scored. The Ostrander, Ohio, native was 3-3 with two grand slams, a double, a career high nine RBI and three runs scored in game one. He followed that by going 2-4 with a grand slam, a solo home run, a walk, five RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap. Prior to that day, Heath had not hit a home run this season and had never hit a grand slam. His 14 RBI more than doubled the 12 runs he'd driven home in the 30 games leading up to his career day and his nine RBI in the first game surpassed his previous best of four which he had done twice last year.

Barnes threw the first no-hitter in St. John's Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer's 12-year tenure at the school as he blanked Georgetown, 16-0, and finished with 14 strikeouts, tying his career high. He was three walks from a perfect game and threw 130 pitches in the complete-game shutout. Barnes became the first St. John's pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Gerry McKiernan did it in 1976. The Chicopee, Mass., native punched out the final batter he faced with his 130th pitch of the night on Friday, completing his no-hit bid and earning the Red Storm's second-straight shutout. He worked five 1-2-3 innings, struck out the side three times and helped his own cause by saving a hit in the Georgetown sixth.

With this week's honor, Barnes automatically are named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.

Fort Worth-based Pro-Line Athletic supplies the official cap to more than 100 Division I college teams and official uniforms and team wear to six Division 1 college teams. Kulbacki and Bach earn National Player of the Week honor

FROM NCBWA RELEASE
DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 17, today. James Madison senior outfielder Kellen Kulbacki was named National Hitter of the Week, while Monmouth junior right-handed pitcher Brad Brach was named National Co-Pitchers of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I conferences each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Kulbacki went 11-for-16 (.688) last week with five walks to reach base in 16 of 21 plate appearances (.762 on-base percentage). He hit four home runs in four games, including his third multiple-home run game of the season, and added three doubles for 26 total bases and a 1.625 slugging percentage. He also scored 10 runs, drove in 11, and stole a base. Kulbacki's week included a span of six consecutive at bats with base hits and eight consecutive plate appearances reaching base. He had multiple hits in each of the four games and nine total bases on Wednesday and Friday.

Brach hurled the NEC's first no-hitter in nearly three years on Friday in a 2-0 win over visiting Long Island. The Freehold, N.J., native was perfect through eight and a third innings, allowed a walk with one out in the ninth on a 3-2 pitch for his only blemish. Brach, who led the conference in ERA a year ago, struck out six and improved to 4-1 on the season with a 3.21 ERA following his second straight nine-inning, complete game effort. It marked the first no-hitter in the NEC since Long Island's John Dooley and freshman Ryan Ekberg combined to no-hit Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0, on April 29, 2004. The last no-hitter by an NEC pitcher in a solo effort came on April 27, 2002 when Sacred Heart's Dan Scott stymied Long Island, 2-0. The gem was also the first for a Monmouth pitcher since Glenn Spencer turned the trick against Mount St. Mary's in 1990.

With this week's honor, Brach automatically are named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.

NCBWA Players of the Week

FROM NCBWA RELEASE

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 8, today. South Carolina junior second baseman Travis Jones was named National Hitter of the Week, while Rice freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Berry and Missouri sophomore right-handed pitcher Rick Zagone were named National Co-Pitchers of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I conferences each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Jones went 11-for-15 (.733) at the plate last week, including 9-for-12 (.750) in the weekend series vs. SEC-leading Florida. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native tallied five home runs in the three-game series vs. the Gators as well as 13 RBIs. He had his second and third multi-homer games of the year on Friday and Sunday vs. Florida, both were Gamecock victories over the Gators. He has three multi-homer games this season for the Gamecocks, the only player on the squad to accomplish the feat. His three-run homer in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Gators tied the game in the ninth inning when the Gamecocks were trailing 5-2 with one out and helped lead the Gamecocks to a weekend series victory.

Berry won his only start of the week on the road at 22nd-ranked East Carolina (Apr. 6). The right-hander from Humble, Texas, allowed just four singles and one walk while striking out a career-high 12 in seven shutout innings in a game the Owls went on to win 4-0. He faced 24 ECU batters and held the Pirates to a composite .167 batting average on his way to his fifth victory of the season. Only three of ECU's hitters Berry faced reached scoring position. Berry has now put together back-to-back dominating starts for Rice the last two weeks. He has allowed just one run, struck out 22 and walked only one in his last 16 innings of work.

Zagone recorded his second complete game in three Big 12 starts this season, as he picked up the victory in the Tigers' 3-0 win over Kansas State on Saturday. The left-hander carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning, as a base hit with one out in the bottom of the ninth was all that stood between Zagone and a no-hitter. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native struck out a career-high 11 KSU batters and remained unbeaten as he improved to 6-0 on the season. The complete-game shutout was the first by a Big 12 pitcher in a conference game this season. There have been five complete games in Big 12 games this year with Zagone claiming two of them.

With this week's honor, Berry and Zagone automatically are named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.

Rohr earned a pair of wins on the week after tossing 13 shutout innings in two games. The Belleville, Ill., native registered a complete-game shutout on March 20 in the Billikens' 1-0 win over Tennessee-Martin, allowing just five singles and one walk. He pitched four innings of one-hit relief on March 25 as Saint Louis edged Charlotte, 6-5. Rohr finished with eight strikeouts for the week.

With this week's honor, Rohr automatically is named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.
