BYU Opens with a win over SHSU
The BYU Cougars opened the 2007 season with a solid 17-8 victory over Sam Houston State. The Cougars were led by a five hit performance from Leon Johnson. He also scored three runs from his lead-off spot in the lineup. The Cougar pitching staff had a rough night with starter Jesse Craig giving up six runs in four innings of work. He was followed by Matt Jensen who gave up two runs in his four innings. Clayton Barnes pitched a scoreless ninth for the victory. Sam Houston State starter Tim Gray who surrendered five runs in his four innings of work. Stephen Spaugh followed him by giving up five runs in 1.1 innings. Tanner Rainwater came in and pitched 2.2 innings and gave up three runs. Zac Baker pitched the ninth and gave up four runs. The Sam Houston State BearKats need to get better pitching if they expect to compete for an NCAA tournament bid. The teams continue the series on Friday afternoon.
