USD knocks off Cal-Poly

The University of San Diego opened the season tonight with a 9-6 victory of Cal Poly. The Toreros were led by a great pitching performance in Brian Matusz. He gave them six shutout innings while striking out 13 batters and giving up only one run. Anthony Slama followed Matusz but got destroyed in his one inning of work by giving up 5 runs (3 earned) and committing a balk in the seventh inning. AJ Griffin came in to pitch the last two innings to pick up the save. The only blemish was one hit. The Toreros were led by Jordan Abruzzo who hit a 3 run homer in the sixth inning. Cal Poly was led by Brett Morel who went 2-4 while scoring a single run. The Mustangs starting pitcher DJ Mauldin lasted four innings while giving up five earned runs. The teams continue the series on Saturday at 1 pm local time.
