ACC Sunday Recap



UNC 11
Miami 7

The North Carolina Tar Heels completed a sweep of the Miami Hurricanes with a 11-7 victory in the series finale. Benji Johnson and Tim Federowicz combined for seven RBI in the game to lead the Tar Heel offense. Johnson hit a grand slam in the second inning to erase an early four run deficit. Manny Miguelez had his worst outing of the season by letting up seven runs in his three innings of work. UNC starter Luke Putkonen was just as bad by going four innings and giving up six runs. UNC will be back in action on Tuesday with Elon and UNC-Greensboro on Wednesday. UNC will host Virginia next weekend in ACC action. Maine and Rutgers will play midweek games with Miami before the Canes host Maryland next weekend.

Wake Forest 7 Virginia 6

The Demon Deacons took the rubber game of their three game set with Virginia by a score of 7-6. Willy Fox drove home Brett Linnenkohl in the bottom of the ninth to give the Deacons their fifth walk-off victory of the season. Wake Forest will be back in action Tuesday with a brief two-game set with Ball State and Virginia will play Niagara on Tuesday. UVA will head to UNC next weekend while Wake Forest heads to FSU to open the ACC schedule for the Noles.

NC State 20 Maryland 3

The NC State baseball team was able to salvage a game on Sunday by picking up a 20-3 victory over Maryland. NC State scored 13 runs in the fifth inning to blow open a 3-1 game to a 16-1 rout. Caleb Mangum went 2-5 with four RBI to lead the Pack offense. NC State will be back in action on Tuesday with a two game set with Valparaiso and then will host Virginia Tech. Maryland will host James Madison and Coppin State before heading back on the road for a series with Miami.

Virginia Tech 5 Georgia Tech 4

The Virginia Tech Hokies scored 3 runs in the ninth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 victory. Matt Foley with one out hit a solo home run off of Matt Wieters to draw the Hokies within a run. Wieters then proceeded to hit the next two batters to set up first and second and one out. Bryan Thomas then grounded out to the shortstop to set up a first and third and two outs when Jose Cueto hit a single to drive in the tying run. Tim Ladd came on to pitch to Sean O'Brien but walked him so Wieters came back to the mound to pitch to Warren Schaffer who hit a single to drive in the eventual winning run.

Boston College 10 Duke 2

The Boston College Eagles completed the three game sweep in Durham over the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday. Eagles starter Nick Asselin picked up his first victory of the season by going seven innings while only allowing two runs. Terry Doyle picked up his second save of the season and weekend by working the last two innings. Johnny Ayers and Jared McGuire both picked up three hits to lead the Eagles charge. Boston College erupted for eight runs over the last two innings to blow the game wide open. Boston College will be back in action at Umass-Amherst on Wednesday before heading to Georgia Tech and Duke will host Fairleigh Dickinson for a brief two game set.

Clemson 7 Memphis 2

The Clemson Tigers used a ten hit attack to knock off Memphis 7-2. Clemson was led on offense by Addison Johnson who went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Clemson will be back in action on Wednesday when Georgia Southern visits and they host ACC rival Duke next weekend. Memphis, on the other hand, will host Illinois State for a brief two game set before having Akron come for a three game set over the weekend.

FSU 9 Indiana 0

The FSU Seminoles continued their perfect start to the season with a 9-0 victory over the Hoosiers. Ryan Strauss pitched eight shutout innings, struck out eight batters, and only gave up three hits to pick up his fourth victory of the season. FSU will be back in action on Friday when they host Wake Forest while Indiana heads to North Florida for games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
