ACC Sunday Recap for 3/18



Game 1 Virginia 9 UNC 6

Sean Doolittle went 4-5 with 2 RBI to lead the Cavaliers to the 9-6 victory over North Carolina in Game 1 of the doubleheader on Saturday. Doolittle started the game on the mound but only lasted 4.0 innings while giving up five runs. Andrew Carraway ended up picking up his third victory of the season for the Cavs by working three innings while giving up one run. Casey Lambert picked up his fourth save by pitching a perfect ninth. Alex White started for UNC but gave up five runs in his 5.1 innings of work. Dustin Ackley led the Carolina offense with a 4-4 day.

Game 2 UNC 9 UVA 4

The UNC Tar Heels were able to avoid a series sweep with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap of their doubleheader with Virginia. Reid Fronk and Tim Federowicz each had three hits in the game. Fronk also picked up 4 RBI in the game. Matt Packer started the game for the Cavs but was knocked around for seven runs over his four innings. Luke Putkonen picked up the victory for giving up four runs over 5.2 innings. The Cavs will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Richmond while UNC will face Towson for a two game series on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Florida State 11 Wake Forest 1

The Florida State Seminoles won their 23rd straight game with a 11-1 victory over the Demon Deacons. FSU exploded for a combined ten runs over the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning to blow open a 1-1 tie. Tony Thomas Jr. and Mark Hallberg both went 2-3 with 2 runs scored to set the table for the rest of the lineup. Ryan Strauss was solid on the mound for the Noles by going seven strong innings and only gave up a single run to get his fifth victory of the season. Garrett Bullock of Wake Forest went 5.1 innings while surrendering four runs. Willy Fox was the only Wake Forest play with two hits. FSU will head to Jacksonville to take on the Dolphins on Wednesday before hosting Boston College next weekend. Wake Forest will host Ohio on Tuesday before heading to Winthrop on Wednesday. Wake will host NC State next weekend for a key ACC series.

Clemson 9 Duke 6

The Clemson Tigers continued Duke's struggles in the ACC opponent by knocking them off 9-6 in the series finale. Clemson starter Alan Farina had a poor outing in which he gave up six runs in two innings. Matt Vaughn was able to salvage the game by following Farina by pitching four shutout innings to get pick up his first win of the year. Brad Chaulk went 3-4 to lead the Tiger offense on the day. The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday when they go to Western Carolina. Duke starter Jonathan Foreman was equally bad by going 2.1 innings and giving up seven runs. Brett Bartles hit a three run homer in the first inning to highlight the Duke offense. Duke will be back in action on Friday when Georgia Tech visits.

Maryland 5 Miami 4

The Maryland Terps were able to salvage a game from Miami 5-4 on Sunday. The Terps used 6.1 inning performance from Kevin Biringer in which he gave up two runs. Brett Cecil pitched a perfect ninth inning to get his sixth save of the season. Maryland will be back in action on Wednesday when VCU visits for a game and will host Clemson Friday-Sunday in the next ACC series. Miami will be off to next weekend when they head to Virginia for a key ACC match-up.

Boston College 9 Georgia Tech 2

Terry Doyle made his first start of the season today and made it count with a six inning start while only giving up two runs. Michael Belfiore pitched the final three innings without giving up a run to get his first career save. The Eagles were led by freshman catcher Tony Sanchez who went 3-4 with a homer and 3 RBI. The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Central Connecticut State while Georgia Tech will face Georgia State. BC heads to Florida State for their next ACC series while GT will visit Duke.

Virginia Tech 6 NC State 4 11 innings

The Virginia Tech Hokies scored two unearned runs in the top of the 11th to avoid the sweep at the hands of NC State. The Hokies and closer Rhett Ballard blew a three run lead in the bottom of the ninth but regained his composure to pick up the victory. The Hokies took advantage of two Drew Martin errors to get the victory. The Hokies will be back in action on Wednesday when Longwood visits before UNC comes to town next weekend. NC State will be heading to Wake Forest next weekend.
