Why is NC State losing top players?

I have noticed a recent trend with the NC State baseball program with top players transferring to other schools across the country. After the 2006 season, Matt Mangini transferred for his junior season to Oklahoma State where he ended up getting picked up by the Seattle Mariners with the 52nd overall pick. This past summer Mike Roskopf transferred out of NC State to the University of Southern California for his senior season. Roskopf showed me some major power this past season when the Wolfpack visited Boston College. What is Elliot Avent doing to these kids? Is it just a random occurence that these players have transferred out the last two seasons? I hope someone has some insight into the reasoning these players have left.

Spencer making changes at Texas Tech

Dan Spencer who recently moved to Texas Tech from two-time national champion Oregon State is making drastic changes with the Texas Tech pitching staff. Spencer is trying to get the pitching staff to do three things every time they take the mound: Throw strikes, Be Aggressive, and Compete on every pitch. It sounds simple but will be tough to implement as the Red Raiders have the worst Team ERA since 2003. The goal of the program is to have an ERA of 4.00 or lower which will make the Red Raiders competitors on the national scene. The full article is available here.

Penn State Scrimmage Recap Part 2

The Penn State Baseball Program played three intra-squad scrimmages over the weekend with the Blue team winning on Friday by a score of 3-1 and on Saturday 4-0. The White team prevented the weekend sweep by winning on Sunday 5-0. A recap of the weekend is available here.

FSU recruit fine after a brief scare

Kyle Long who committed this summer to play baseball at Florida State beginning in the 2008-2009 school year received a major scare in a high school football game on September 14th. He laid motionless on the field after being hit in the back of his neck. He was taken off on a stretcher but was back working out within 48 hours after it was only a brief scare. Long is the son of Howie Long who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Long is expected to compete for a spot in the starting lineup in 2009 and might pitch for the Seminoles. The biggest challenge for Mike Martin Sr. with Long is going to be keeping him off of the football field as Long is a big recruit in football with his 6'7 280 pound frame. All American SS Flaherty Suffers Freak Injury

Vandysports.com's Mike Rapp sat down with Commodore Shortstop Ryan Flaherty. "Flash", as the '07 3rd Team All-American (Rivals.com) Shortstop is known, was injured last week when a routine grounder took a freak hop and popped him in the eye.

Flaherty suffered a broken orbital bone, but is expected to return to practice in the next two weeks with the help of a protective facemask.

Flaherty is riding a VU record 35 game hitting streak into 2008. As a Sophomore, Flaherty hit .381, with 23 doubles, 59 runs and 57 RBI. He was named to Team USA and has had a stellar .969 Fielding Percentage each of the past two years. Flaherty led Vanderbilt in hitting (.339) as a true Freshman.

Flash is the son of College Baseball Hall of Famer Ed Flaherty, the head coach at Southern Maine University.

Gillespie to UCI

Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com has confirmed what the College Baseball Blog passed along yesterday, that former Southern Cal coach Mike Gillespie has been hired to take on the UC-Irvine job.

The report breaks the news that Cal State Los Angeles coach Pat Shine will serve as an assistant to Gillespie and run the program. You can read Kendall Roger's article here.

Southern Miss opens fall practice

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team takes its first step towards earning its sixth-straight postseason appearance, Monday, when the team begins its fall practice schedule.

The Golden Eagles, which finished 39-21 overall last season and were 14-10 in Conference USA play, earning them a third-place finish in league play and a s Southern Miss also played in the Oxford Regional, going 1-2 in that event as the program's win mark reached at least 39 for each of the past five seasons.

Southern Miss baseball coach Corky Palmer welcomes 13 new players, along with 10 position players and eight pitchers who saw action from last year's squad as practice opens at 2:30 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.

"We are very interested to see how our new players will do as we feel like we had a good recruiting class coming in this season," said Palmer, who is starting his 11th season at the helm of the program. "There should be a lot of excitement as we get started because we also have a lot of players coming back from a year ago. Hopefully we will have a good fall practice to get us ready for the spring."

The practice schedule for the Golden Eagles typically runs Monday through Friday with 2:30 p.m., start times. Southern Miss will occasionally scrimmage on Sundays. Those start times are 1:30 p.m.

Aggie Baseball Announces 2008 Schedule

The defending Big 12 Champion Texas A&M baseball team will play 39 home games in 2008, including 20 straight to start the year, head coach Rob Childress announced Monday.

Half of the Aggies' games in 2008 will be played against teams who made the NCAA Tournament in 2007, including Ohio State, Arkansas, Rutgers, Oklahoma State, Rice, Baylor, Missouri, TCU, Sam Houston State, Nebraska and Texas. All but seven of A&M's opponents return to the diamond off winning seasons.

Mike Gillespie New Coach at UC-Irvine??

According to sources Coach Gillespie has decided to get back into coaching after 15 months lay off. It has not been made official yet but UC-Irvine will announce the new coach of the Anteaters as Mike Gillespie real soon. Coach Gillespie comes to UC-Irvine after spending 20 years at USC and winning a National Championship back in 1998. This sets up a family rivalry with USC as his son-in-law Chad Kreuter took over the Trojans job in 2007.

Two Illini players honored for Summer Success

The University of Illinois infielders Joe Bonadonna and Brandon Wikoff were recognized for their summer accomplishments. Bonadonna played for the Duluth Huskies in the Northwoods League where he received the Silver Glove Award (top defensive player) for second basemen. He was also named to the league's post season All-Star team. Bonadonna also broke the Northwoods league record for stolen bases in a season with 45 in 56 attempts. Wikoff received accolades from Perfect Game Crosschecker as the 24th best prospect in the Northwoods League and picked up a spot on the post season All-Star team. The full release is available here.

Dowdy dismissed from ECU Baseball team

Josh Dowdy of East Carolina has been dismissed from the baseball program according to a press release put out on Saturday. He earned a spot in the rotation in 2007 where he posted a 5-2 record with a 3.62 ERA. The full release is available here.

NCAA ties College World Series to new stadium

Months of negotiations remain to hash out the details of a new downtown home for the College World Series, but Omaha's mayor said Friday that the plan offers a "historic" chance to keep the championship in Omaha through 2030.

Public investment: About $36 million in improvements have been made since 1989.

A plan to build a new ballpark north of the Qwest Center Omaha won the NCAA's blessing Friday, and city officials said they hope to finalize the stadium's design and financing plans by Jan. 1.

"This is a critical step in what is still a very long process. Now we can get to work on the details requested by the NCAA," Mayor Mike Fahey said.

Fahey's goal is a downtown home for the CWS by 2011.

Dennis Poppe, the NCAA's senior director for baseball and football, said: "We have a sense of direction, and we are moving forward."

Opponents of moving the CWS from its home at Rosenblatt Stadium said they are not giving up.

TCU announces 2008 Schedule

The TCU Horned Frogs have released their 2008 schedule recently. The Horned Frogs will open up the season on February 22nd when they host Cal-State Fullerton for the first game of a three game set. This game marks the beginning of the Dave Serrano era at Fullerton. The next weekend they will head up to Minneapolis to take part in the MetroDome tournament with Minnesota, Pepperdine, and Tulane. If you are in the Minnesota area, you need to make it to that tournament to see top of the line College Baseball as each school is expected to finish near the top of their conference. TCU then heads home for two non-conference weekday games before hosting Ole Miss for a three game set. TCU finishes their non-conference weekend schedule with a visit to Wichita State from March 14th-16th. TCU then heads into conference match-ups on the weekends and get the key match-up against Utah in Lupton Stadium on May 2nd-4th. TCU will also host the Mountain West Conference tournament on May 20th-25th. The full schedule is available in PDF format here. Notre Dame opens up Fall Practice

The Notre Dame baseball program has opened up fall practice after a disappointing 2007 season which saw them finish the year with a 28-28 overall record while going 11-15 in the conference which gave them a seventh place finish. The Irish are welcoming a top ten recruiting class to South Bend and will try to return to the top of the Big East conference under second-year head coach Dave Schrage.

Ole Miss Fall Preview

The Ole Miss baseball program is starting up fall practice on Friday. Pitt and Charlotte start Fall Practice

The Pittsburgh Panthers and the Charlotte 49ers have started up Fall practice at each school. The Panthers finished the 2007 season with a 27-27 record and a 15-11 record in the Big East conference. Charlotte is coming off an NCAA appearance in the Columbia (SC) regional where they held their own against South Carolina and NC State. They won the Atlantic 10 conference with a 23-4 conference record and an overall record of 49-12.

Washington State Summer Recap

The Washington State Media Relations department has put out a release detailing the successful summers of many different Cougar baseball program. Greg Lagreid picked up the biggest honor as he was named an All-American at the National Baseball Congress World Series. The entire release is available from Washington State here.

Houston focusing on 2009 roster

The Daily Cougar, the official student newspaper of the University of Houston, has posted an article from Scott Gonzales on the recruiting efforts of the Houston program. Rayner Noble tells the writer that they already have four commitments for the 2009 season but want to pick up two more by the final signing day in November. The full article is available here.

Cornell returns a strong team

The Cornell Daily Sun writer Eric Haskel checked in on the Cornell baseball program status for fall practice. Cornell lost Justin Milo to UVM and pitcher Jim Hyland to graduation but return a veteran squad. Cornell finished the 2007 season in last place with a 8-12 record in the Gehrig Division in the Ivy League. The full article is available here.

Cornell releases 2008 schedule

The Cornell baseball program has announced their 2008 schedule which is highlighted by a season opening tournament where they will play face Siena and the host Virginia in four games. They will also take part in the Villanova Classic where they will play Temple, LaSalle, and the host Wildcats. The Big Red will make their annual trip to Florida but they have not announced opponents for the entire week. The team will open at home against Ivy League power Harvard on March 29th. Oregon State set to visit White House

HILLSBORO, OREGON—September 17, 2007—The next grassy field the two-time NCAA Division I National Championship baseball team will march onto will be the famed south lawn of the White House. President George W. Bush has invited the Oregon State University Beavers to his home at the nation’s capital city, Washington, D.C., on Friday, September 21st. The President is expected to formally congratulate the team for its repeat win at the College World Series in June.

OSU Head Coach Pat Casey will present President Bush with a team jersey and a unique, commemorative championship baseball bat made by Wilson/DeMarini. The bat is painted in the Beavers’ colors, black and orange, with the OSU National Champion Team logo hand-painted on it alongside the DeMarini logo.

The gift is notable, since not only is DeMarini an Oregon company located not far from Oregon State University, DeMarini has played a major role in OSU’s success at the world-class plate. In the two years OSU has been exclusively swinging DeMarini bats, they have won national championships. In addition to OSU’s success, the NCAA Division II and III national championship teams also won swinging DeMarini, as did many top players at the Little League World Series.

Lobos Add Another Carlson

New Mexico has signed its third of the four baseball playing brothers of Kansas. The Carlson klan of Topeka has pretty solid genes. Three brothers, including former stud Chris Carlson, signed with New Mexico. One is at Missouri State.

College Baseball In Jeopardy!

This letter was written by Coach Polk of Mississippi State University. Coach Polk has been a supporter of College Baseball during his long coaching career. This letter is very lengthy but very detail. Please take the time to read it and leave your comments.

Allow me to first of all apologize for the extreme length of this letter, but I deem it necessary to fully express my thoughts which are reflective of the concerns of a majority of our college baseball coaches (NCAA-I), our student-athletes, their respective family members, and those that care about the value and worth of intercollegiate baseball.

All educators, which includes coaches, must first gain the attention of those with whom they are communicating so they are fully aware who the communicator is and what credentials that person possesses.

My name is Ron Polk, and I am the head baseball coach at Mississippi State University which is a member of the Southeastern Conference. As you read this letter, you will quickly ascertain that my grammar is not the best, nor is my sentence structure and punctuation. For, I am just a baseball coach.

Help Wanted??

I have recently been told by my current employer that they will be cutting my hours down so I will have some more time to cover college baseball for the time being but I am in the need for a full-time position in New England. I have a Bachelor's of Science from UNH in Sport Studies and a minor in Recreational Management and Policy. Does anyone have any job openings that I am qualified for? Penn State Scrimmage Recap

The Penn State Baseball Program played two scrimmages on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, The teams played until a 2-2 tie which was ended because both teams ran out of pitchers. The White team scored two runs in the first inning off of Blue starter Mike Lorentson. The game would stay 2-0 until the fourth inning when Grant Youngblood got a two out walk. He proceeded to move to second on a single from Mike Deese. Youngblood would then steal third base and would advance home as the throw got away to put the Blue team behind 2-1. The game would stay 2-1 until the ninth inning when with two outs Mike Deese hitting a double and coming home on a single from Joe Blackburn. The scrimmage on Monday was won by the White team 3-1. The White team would use a two run sixth inning to grab the victory. The score was tied at one in the sixth when Jack Greenberg got a leadoff walk moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from freshman catcher Bobby Jacobs. Jacobs would get moved to second on a pass ball and then scored on a single from Rob Yodice. The full recap from the scrimmages is available here.

Commodores land another All-American

What does it feel like to recruit running backs like Southern Cal? Probably a lot like how Coach Tim Corbin feels when he's recruiting arms. Corbin has nailed down a seventh big time Pitcher for the '09 recruiting class.

This one might be the biggest. Adding in a two top JuCo transfers, an elite third sacker and a stud outfielder, and Coach Erik Bakich is close to finishing up recruiting for the current cycle.

The latest commitment comes after three weekends in a row in which the Commodores hosted top recruiting prospects, including the blue chippers above referenced. They follow a recruiting class from which Bakich and Corbin escaped Draft-unscathed. Highlighting the new Commodores are potential true-Freshman impact players Catcher Curtis Casali, Pitcher Chase Reid, and Firstbaseman Aaron Westlake. Expected to have more time to grow are high ceiling Pitcher Kellen St. Luce and Outfielder Joey Manning.

Arkansas filling holes?

The Arkansas Traveler writer Cory Crawford checks in on the Arkansas baseball program where they have welcomed 20 new players. The Hogs will be looking to fill in the starting rotation where they were decimated by the MLB where they had three starting pitchers picked in the first two rounds. Maine to play four games this fall

The Maine Black Bears have announced that they will play a pair of games against the Academy of Baseball Canada and Team Ontario the next two weekends. On September 21st they will host Baseball Canada at 5 pm and then will take them on the next day at 5 pm or at the conclusion of the Umass-Maine football game. They will play Team Ontario September 29th and 30th at 2:30 to round out the fall schedule. The full release is available here.

Baylor Bears start fall Practice!

The players are lacing up their cleats. The leather mitts are popping from blazing fastballs. The ping from the impact made on aluminum bats echoes across the street.

Fall baseball practice has arrived for Baylor, and although most of the team still hasn't had much of a break from the game since spring practice started late last January, the Bears are back on the diamond preparing to contend for their first College World Series appearance since 2005.

Baylor will return six starting position players and a deep pitching rotation for the 2008 season.

But head coach Steve Smith said the fall is an important time to evaluate the incoming freshman class as well as the progression of his returning players after summer leagues at various locations across the country.

"Obviously we have a lot of new guys," Smith said. "We get a chance to see them up close and personal, so there is a lot of evaluation going on. A lot of the teaching going on for the guys is much of a review since we have so many returning players."

Arizona State opens fall practice with 29 scrimmages

The Arizona State Sun Devils have released their fall baseball schedule with 29 intra-squad scrimmages scheduled. The full release is available here. This is not the typical fall schedule as teams usually use this time to develop their players skills in practice and have a five game series at the end of the fall. I wonder why ASU has decided to play so many games this fall? Is there that much competition for spots on the team? Does Pat Murphy just want to take a look at his players in a game situation? Richmond annouces 2008 Schedule

The Richmond Spiders have released their 2008 schedule which is highlighted by 28 home games. The Spiders open the 2008 season on February 22nd when they take part in a tournament hosted by Jacksonville which also includes UNC-Wilmington, UW-Milwaukee, and the host Dolphins. They will play 13 games against seven 2007 NCAA participants. The full schedule is available here.

Southern Miss expanding stadium

The Southern Miss Department of Athletics has announced plans to give fans the opportunity to purchase chairback seating in an expansion plan that calls for the construction of a 580-seat grandstand down the third-base line at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.

Sales of the seats will begin on Sept. 17.

"We felt that with our demand increasing each season for seats that this project allows more fans an opportunity to see Golden Eagle baseball," Southern Miss coach Corky Palmer said.

With a purchase, that person will have their name placed on the seat for a minimum of 10 years or as long as that person is a season ticket holder, whichever is longer. The cost of the seat is $400, which is a one-time fee.

USF Baseball Begins Fall Workouts

TAMPA, Fla. – The official start date for fall practices isn’t until October, but the University of South Florida baseball team opened season No. 2 under head coach Lelo Prado on Sept. 4, beginning fall 4-on-1 workouts with the coaching staff.

During the sessions, four players at a time are allowed to practice on the field with a coach.

“Our 4-on-1s have been outstanding defensively, offensively and pitching-wise,” said assistant coach Lazer Collazo. “These kids want to work. These kids are coming in on their own, getting here early in the afternoon and leaving late in the evening. They want to learn the system quickly, and as coaches, we are seeing that they want to grasp everything they can as early as they can.

The Bulls, who were 34-26 overall and 23-15 in the BIG EAST last season, are a mixed team of 11 returning players and 29 newcomers, including 16 freshmen.

“Everyone knows we have a young team,” said Collazo. “It is a team that has to gel little-by-little and get the chemistry going. We especially need to gel now in the fall because the quicker we can blend a young team like this, the better it is going to be for us on opening day in the spring.”

USF returns Third Team BIG EAST second baseman Dexter Butler and 2006 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year third baseman Addison Maruszak. The pitching staff looks forward to the return of junior right handed pitcher Daniel Thomas, who took a red-shirt year last season. Sophomores Shawn Sanford (3.10 ERA, 11 saves) and Matt Quevedo (4-3, 4.01 ERA) also return to the mound for the Bulls this year.

The Bulls welcome four newcomers who were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, three in 2007 and one in 2006. Left handed pitcher Stephen Hunt (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit HS) was selected by Oakland in the 17th round and the Red Sox picked LHP Juan Carlin (Riverview, Fla./Riverview HS) in the 29th round. The Red Sox also selected right hander Derrick Stultz (Tampa, Fla./Wharton). In 2006 Brian Hobbs (Marietta, Fla./Chipola JC) was selected by the Angels in the 41st round.

The Bulls begin official fall full-team practice on Oct. 8.

UNC announces Fall World Series

The North Carolina Tar Heels have released their fall schedule for 2007. They will play five game from October 9th-October 15th at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary NC. The full fall schedule is available here. The Tar Heels will play the entire 2008 season in Cary NC with Boshamer Stadium being renovated for the 2009 season. Rivals checks in on the Big East

Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com has released an article about fall story lines around the Big East conference. The article discusses how Louisville's run to the CWS will impact the conference. Some people around the country forget that Louisville finished in third place in 2007 behind Rutgers and St. John's. Marist welcomes eight players

The Marist baseball program will welcome eight new players for the 2008 season including three transfers. Chris Wojick from Maine, B.J. Martin from St. John's, and Zach Starkey from Wabash Valley College will join five freshman in the Red Fox program. The full release is available here.

Fullerton and UC-Irvine News

The Daily Pilot wrote an article this weekend on Dave Serrano leaving UC-Irvine for Fullerton. The article discusses some of the reasons Serrano left Irvine for Fullerton which is led by the fact that the Irvine athletic department is currently operating without an athletic director. Serrano also states that Cal-State Fullerton athletic director Brian Quinn spoke with him in 2004 when Serrano left for Irvine and told him that he would be the next coach at Fullerton if Horton ever left. Quinn also reiterated this at Rosenblatt Stadium when the Anteaters were making their magical run. C of C Fall Baseball World Series

The College of Charleston baseball team's annual Fall World Series will begin September 26th at Patriots Point Stadium in Mount Pleasant. Charleston will play a seven-game series between the Maroon and Gold squads. The Cougars won their fourth straight Southern Conference title in the spring after posting a 39-19 overall record and a 20-7 Southern Conference mark. It was Charleston's third regular-season crown in the past four seasons. The Cougars won the 2006 SoCon Tournament title.
