Temple 2008 schedule released

The Temple Owls have released their 2008 schedule. They will open the season with a three game set at Bethune Cookman on February 22nd-24th. They will head the next weekend down to Old Dominion for a nice matchup of mid-majors. Temple will play a full A-10 schedule this season with Charlotte, Duquesne, Richmond, Fordham, and Dayton visiting the Owls. The Owls will play road series against URI, St. Joe's, George Washington, and St. Louis. The A-10 tournament will take place from May 21-24th in Camden NJ. The full schedule is available here.

Cornell releases 2008 schedule

The Cornell baseball program has announced their 2008 schedule which is highlighted by a season opening tournament where they will play face Siena and the host Virginia in four games. They will also take part in the Villanova Classic where they will play Temple, LaSalle, and the host Wildcats. The Big Red will make their annual trip to Florida but they have not announced opponents for the entire week. The team will open at home against Ivy League power Harvard on March 29th. Temple mourns the loss of Richie Gargel

Temple University is mourning the loss of sophomore pitcher Richie Gargel who passed away on Wednesday from injuries sustained in a swimming accident. He appeared in 20 games in 2007 while striking out 27 batters in 30 innings. Gargel was playing this summer for the St. Cloud (MN) River Bats where he was sporting a 1-0 record in 8.1 innings of work. The College Baseball Blog would like to send their condolences to the Temple community and to the Gargel family.

Liberty Bell Classic Semifinal Results

The Lafayette Leopards and Lehigh Mountain Hawks both picked up victories in the semifinals of the Liberty Bell Classic to qualify for the final on April 10th at Citizens Bank Park home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Lafayette used a ten hit attack to knock off the Penn Quakers by a score of 10-2. The Leopards got a strong start from Brad Woodfield who went six innings while giving up two unearned runs. Jeff Butler led the offense by going 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Kevin Leasure also had a strong game by going 2-3 and two RBIs. The Quakers top hitter for the game was Williams Gordon who went 2-3. The Quakers starter Robbie Seymour gave up eight runs on six hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. Penn will be back in action on Wednesday at 6pm when they visit Lehigh. Lafayette will head to NJIT for a 6pm game also.

The Lehigh Mountain Hawks got ten runs in the first inning to cruise to a 14-4 victory over Temple to advance to the Liberty Bell Classic final next Tuesday at Citizen Bank Park. Joe Ercolano and Liam O'Connor each scored two runs in the first inning to lead the Hawks to the ten run inning. Lehigh starter Joe Matteo pitched four scoreless innings to get his first win of the year against three losses. Temple starter Rob Chamra only lasted 1/3 of an inning while letting up nine runs (one earned) to put his record at 0-2 for the season. Temple will be back in action Friday when they head to Dayton while Lehigh will face Penn at Limeport Stadium.

Temple edges Delaware

The Temple Owls fought off a furious comeback from the Delaware Blue Hens to win 5-4. The Owls led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth before the Delaware offense woke up with four runs and the tying run in Bryan Hagerich on third with two outs and Ryan Engelhart at the plate. He proceeded to ground out to second base to give the Owls the victory. Temple was led by a 2-5 game from Dan Brady while Delaware's offensive star was Bryan Hagerich who picked up two hits in the loss. Temple will be back in action on Wednesday when they go to St. John's while Delaware hosts Saint Joseph's.

Penn knocks off Temple

The Penn Quakers picked up a 5-1 victory over Temple in non conference action on Wednesday afternoon. Josh Corn led the Quaker offense with a 3-4 day with two RBI. The Quakers used nine different pitchers in the game all lasting one inning except for Bret Wallace who went 0.2 innings and Todd Roth who went 1.1 innings. Reid Terry ended up with the win credited to him while Rob Chamra got the loss for Temple. Penn heads to Georgetown for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Temple will be back in action Friday with a visit from Binghamton for a single game.

UNC destroys Temple

The UNC Tar Heels picked up a 14-0 victory over the helpless Temple Owls on Wednesday. Reid Fronk, Josh Horton, Chad Flack, and Dustin Ackley each drove in multiple runs to the lead the Tar Heels to the victory. Adam Warren earned the win as the Tar Heels used seven pitchers to combine on a seven hit shuout. Temple starter Tom Bingham picked up the loss to head to 1-2 on the season. North Carolina will be back in action this weekend when they open the ACC season hosting Miami while Temple hosts Buffalo on Saturday for a doubleheader and Sunday for a single game.

The Duke Blue Devils have continued their strong start to the season with a 7-4 victory over the Temple Owls. They used a squeeze play in the bottom of the sixth by Jonathan Foreman which got Alexander Hassan home to get the 5-4 lead and they tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning to get to the final score.

The UNC-Greensboro Spartans used a seven run fifth inning to cruise to a 10-8 victory over the NC State Wolfpack. Korey Judd picked up the win for the Spartans while Nate Karns picked up the loss.

Eddie Williams was able to scatter six hits and seven walks to only allow two runs in his 6.2 innings of work to pick up the huge victory for the Bonnies. It is only their second victory on the season. Miami was led on offense by Mark Sobolewski who went 4-4 in the losing effort.

Brandon Marsh picked up his second straight game-winning RBI as he drove in Greg Miclat with the winning run in the ninth inning. Jake Rule picked up his first victory in a Cavs uniform while Casey Lambert picked up his third save of the young season. Allie Swanson picked up his third loss of the season for the Dukes. All-American Kellen Kulbacki went 1-4 in the losing effort for the Dukes.

Duke hosts Temple and Xavier

The Duke Blue Devils will host Temple on Tuesday and Xavier on Wednesday before opening the ACC season against the Boston College Eagles. Duke enters Tuesday's game with a 13-1 record while Temple enters with a record of 2-7. The Owls pitching has been atrocious in the early part of the season with a 9.95 Team ERA. Jeremy Gould (0-1, 6.52 ERA) will get the start for the Blue Devils while Rob Chamra (0-0, 27.00 ERA) gets the ball for the Owls. Xavier will enter with a 1-10 record coming off a three game sweep from Vanderbilt. They beat Oakland University to pick up their only win on the season. Both Duke and Xavier have not announced starting pitchers.
