Wake Forest 8 Maryland 6

Garrett Bullock pitched 7.2 innings while allowing 12 hits but kept the Terps off the board until the eighth inning to give the Demon Deacons an 8-6 victory. Allan Dykstra and Evan Ochetree each went 2-4 with 3 RBIs. Maryland will try to steal a game tomorrow when they face off against Wake Forest in the series finale at 1 pm.

Miami 5 Georgia Tech 2

Mark Sobolewski hit a three run homer in the bottom of the eleventh inning to walk-off with the victory over Georgia Tech 5-2. Blake Tekotte led the Canes offense by getting three hits on the afternoon. Matt Wieters and Michael Fisher were the only Jackets with two hits in the game. Dennis Raben picked up his first victory for the Hurricanes while Danny Payne picked up the loss.

Clemson 6 Virginia Tech 3 (resumption of 4/6 game)

The Clemson Tigers and Virginia Tech Hokies completed their suspended game with Clemson coming out victorious with a 6-3 victory. Matt Vaughn got the victory by going the last five innings in relief of Daniel Moskos. Vaughn picks up his third victory without a loss on the season. Greg Fryman gets the loss to drop his record to 2-5. He let up five runs in five innings.

Clemson 8 Virginia Tech 5

David Kopp led the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over Virginia Tech by going seven innings while allowing five hits and two runs to up his record to 4-2. Andrew Wells got the loss for Virginia Tech by giving up five runs (three earned) in 6.1 innings. Taylor Harbin picked up two hits and two RBIs to lead the Tigers offense. The teams will play Game 3 on Sunday and Virginia Tech will try to get at least a game from the weekend set.

Duke 13 Virginia 9

The Duke Blue Devils used a 17 hit attack to knock off the third ranked Virginia Cavaliers 13-9. The Blue Devils were led on offense by Brett Bartles who went 3-6 with five RBIs. Nate Freiman went 3-5 with 2 RBIs in support of Bartles. Sean Doolittle, Greg Miclat, and Brandon Guyer all had two hits in the loss. Duke starter Tony Bajoczky goes to 6-2 with the win while Matt Packer goes to 3-2.

NC State 8 Florida State 6

NC State used a six run third inning to take control of Game 2 of their weekend set with the Florida State Seminoles. Andrew Brackman started for the Wolfpack (only 2 earned) continued his recent struggles in which he pitched seven innings while giving up five runs. Eryk McConnell picked up his eighth save by going the final two innings while allowing a run. Michael Hyde started for Florida State but only lasted 2.2 innings giving up six runs (only one earned) to drop his record to 8-2 which is his second consecutive loss.

UNC 7 Boston College 2 (Game 1)

UNC leads Boston College 6-1 heading into the top of the ninth in Game 2 of the doubleheader on Saturday. The teams will finish the game before Game 3 on Sunday.

The Citadel sweeps Wofford

In Game 1 of a doubleheader, The Citadel Bulldogs batted around in two separate innings to throttle Wofford 17-5. The Bulldogs had 17 hits in the game including homers from Kyle Swauger and Richard Jones. Jones went 3-4 with four runs scored and also drove in four runs. Matt Crim picked up the victory to up his record to 3-2. He allowed five runs (four earned) on ten hits. Ben Austin grabbed the loss for Wofford to drop his record to 7-3 on the season.

In Game 2, The Citadel Bulldogs got a walkoff single from Chance Smith in the bottom of the tenth to complete a sweep over Wofford by a score of 8-7 on Saturday evening. Link Saunders picked up the victory by pitching a scoreless ninth and tenth inning to up his record to 5-2.

Holy Cross sweeps Lehigh

The Holy Cross Crusaders swept the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in Patriot League action on Saturday. Scott Hampe pitched a no-hitter in game one. He allowed four walks as they accounted for all the base runners for Lehigh. Norm Roth led the Crusaders with two hits in his three at bats. He also scored two runs in the game. Brendan Akashian went 3-4 with 3 RBIs in Game 2 to lead Holy Cross to a 6-3 victory.

Russell ties UT Baseball season home run record !

Russell Moldenhauer doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth as Texas beat Kansas 6-5 on Saturday.

Texas (28-10, 9-3 Big 12) tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh on a home run by Kyle Russell, his second of the game and 20th of the season.

Kansas (18-20, 4-8) had tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth. Robby Price singled to score Buck Afenir, Brock Simpson drove in two runs and Erik Morrison had an RBI double.

Kansas took a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Kyle Murphy singled home Preston Land.

Randy Boone (1-5) pitched 2 1-3 innings of relief for the win, and Kansas reliever Paul Smyth (2-2) was the losing pitcher.

Seahawks down Pride

Daniel Hargrave drove in the game winning run with a double in the top of the ninth to lead the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks to the 3-2 victory over the Hofstra. Cody Dickens picked up the victory by working the final 1.2 innings and did not surrender a run. Steve Halford went 2-3 for his 18th multiple hit game of the season. UNC-Wilmington and Hofstra finish the series tomorrow at 1 pm.

George Mason drops game to Delaware

The Delaware Blue Hens picked up a 6-2 victory over the George Mason Patriots on Saturday. The Blue Hens got a strong seven innings allowing two runs from starting pitcher Billy Harris. He also struck out seven batters. Ryan Jablonski and Bill Merkler hit homers to lead the Blue Hen offense. Mike Modica picked up the loss for George Mason to drop his record to a 2-4 mark.

Jeff Thomson leads NU to victory over JMU

The Northeastern Huskies used five homers to get a 9-3 victory over James Madison in Game 2 of the CAA conference showdown. Jeff Thomson picked up the victory for Northeastern by working 7.2 innings while giving up three runs to up his record to 3-2 on the season. James Madison starter Justin Wood only lasted 4.0 innings while giving up six runs on nine hits. Northeastern was led by Frank Pesanello went 3-4 with two runs and three RBIs which all came on his two homers. The teams will play the final game of their three game set at 1 pm Sunday where James Madison will try to salvage a game.

The CBB checks in on BC-UNC Game 1

The College Baseball Blog headed to the Boston College and North Carolina doubleheader on Saturday. I only stayed for the first game of the doubleheader because of the bitter cold that is hitting New England.

Robert Woodard started for the Tar Heels and Kevin Boggan for the Eagles. Woodard only lasted four and a third innings while giving up two runs on eight hits. Woodard was not very effective in his work as he had zero strikeouts and the Boston College bats were not missing many pitches. He did not have his top of the line slider that has become his out pitch over the last few years. Kevin Boggan gave the Eagles six strong innings while giving up three runs on six hits. Boggan had a decent curveball and an effective curveball that kept the Tar Heels off balance but they were able to get the key hit unlike Boston College. Boggan was followed by freshman Michael Belfiore who went 2.2 innings while surrending three runs on five hits. Geoff Oxley got the final out of the ninth.

The Boston College Eagles continued to run themselves out of innings. In the third inning, Ryan Hutchinson reached third base with one out and subsequently picked off by Robert Woodard in a 2-1 game at that point. The next inning Boston College had Tony Sanchez and Eric Campbell get back to back singles to set up a 1st and 2nd situation with Peter Frates up to bat. Frates proceeded to lay down which went right back to Woodard who proceeded to throw Sanchez out at third base and Chad Flack just missed doubling up Frates at first base. Jett Ruiz then came up and hit a sharp groundball to the right of Josh Horton who snagged it and tossed it to Reid Fronk who made a great turn at the bag and completed the double play by making a very strong throw to Dustin Ackley at first. Boston College loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but were not able to bring any runners in.

The UNC Tar Heels showed a very strong lineup from top to bottom. Josh Horton hit a key three run double to blow the game wide open and provided the final 7-2 scoreline. Horton went 2-3 in the game while scoring three runs, driving in three, and walking twice. Horton really impressed me with his stellar defense and great hitting. Reid Fronk also played extremely well with many extended at bats including his triple he hit in the first innings. He went 3-5 and was only a homer shy of hitting for the cycle. Dustin Ackley looked like a solid player but only went 1-4.

The teams will be back in action on Sunday for the final game of the series.

Bryan Henry continued his perfect start to the season by going seven strong innings while allowing three runs on six hits. Brandon Reichert led the Noles offense by grabbing 4 RBIs including a home run. Buster Posey led all players with three hits.

The Virginia Cavaliers received complete shutout from Jacob Thompson who allowed only four hits while striking out ten to pick up the 4-0 victory over Duke. Greg Miclat, Sean Doolittle, and Brandon Marsh all went 2-3 in the game to lead the offense.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets got a three run homer from Wally Crancer in the third inning to lead the Jackets to the 9-2 victory over Miami. David Duncan pitched 5.1 innings while giving two runs to up his record to 5-2 on the season.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons came back from two three run deficits to deficit the Terps by an 8-5 score. Andy Goff hit his first homer of the season and Ben Terry went 4-4 to lead the Deacons attack. Wake Forest starter Brad Kledzik settled down after a rough first inning to allow five runs over his six innings.

Texas drops game two against Kansas

No. 6 Texas allowed seven extra-base hits, including three home runs, in a 14-6 loss to Kansas in Big 12 Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

Adrian Alaniz (8-2), who entered the game tied for the national lead for wins with eight, was saddled with the loss as he allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings.

Russell Moldenhauer led the Longhorns' offense, going 2-for-2 with a triple. Jordan Danks and Chance Wheeless each hit solo home runs.

Texas (27-10, 8-3) was doomed by a six-run fourth inning by Kansas and struggled to get back into the contest. The Jayhawks' fourth inning featured a solo home run by Casey Larson, his second of the game and RBI singles by Ryne Price and Eric Snowden. The six-run inning gave Kansas a 10-3 lead heading into the fourth.

The Longhorns put up single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but those runs were negated by a two-run bottom of the sixth for Kansas, giving the Jayhawks a 12-6 margin heading into the last third of the game.

Texas pounced on the Jayhawks early with a run in the first inning. Danks drew a walk to start the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wheeless and scored on a double to the wall in left centerfield by Bradley Suttle.

Kansas (18-19, 4-7) gained the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the first. Kyle Murphy lead off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Robby Price. A fielding error by Suttle on a ground ball to third base by John Allman put runners at the corners. Brock Simpson singled to left centerfield, driving in Murphy with a game-tying run and Erik Morrison followed with a go-ahead single to centerfield, plating Allman.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Larson delivered a home run over the wall in dead centerfield to inflate the Jayhawks' lead to 3-1.

A pair of wild pitches by Alaniz led to a Kansas run in the third. With one out, Alaniz fanned Morrison, but a wild pitch on strike three put him on base. A groundout to first base by Ryne Prince moved Morrison to second. He stole third and scored on another wild pitch by Alaniz, staking Kansas to a 4-1 lead.

Nick Peoples hit an RBI triple and Josh Prince plated Peoples with a sacrifice squeeze bunt in the top of the fourth to cut the Kansas lead to 4-3 before the floodgates opened.

Texas and Kansas conclude the three-game series at Hoglund Park on Saturday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.

ACC Weekend Preview for April 6th-8th

FSU at NC State

The Florida State Seminoles head to Raleigh NC to take on the Wolfpack. Florida State is coming off a 16-7 loss to Florida on Wednesday. The Seminoles have a 29-3 record and 8-1 in the ACC. The Seminoles starting pitchers have been fantastic this year with Bryan Henry leading the staff with a record of 7-0 and an ERA of 2.44. Ryan Strauss and Michael Hyde complete the staff. Strauss has a 7-0 record with an ERA of 2.08. Michael Hyde got the first loss for the staff last Saturday against Duke. He has an 8-1 record and an ERA of 2.79.

The NC State Wolfpack picked up a come from behind victory over East Carolina on Wednesday by a 3-2 scoreline. They enter the series with Florida State sporting a 23-8 overall record and 8-4 record in the ACC. NC State completed a sweep over the Boston College Eagles last weekend and outscored the Eagles by a score of 40-7 over series. NC State top pitching prospect is Andrew Brackman who pitched seven innings last weekend while only allowing 1 run and four hits. He hit 97 on one of the radar guns that was around me. He has an overall record of 5-2 with a 3.42 ERA.

Clemson at Virginia Tech

The Clemson Tigers will head to Virginia Tech for a three game set this weekend. They have an overall record of 20-9 but an average 5-4 mark in the ACC. The Tigers picked up two big OOC victories over SEC foe Georgia. The Tigers pitching has been suspect so they will have potential All-American closer Daniel Moskos making his first career start on Friday. The top hitter for the Tigers is Brad Chalk who is hitting .408. Andy D'Alessio is questionable for the weekend with a pulled groin he suffered last weekend against Miami.

Virginia Tech enters with 16-14 overall record and 4-8 in the ACC under first year head coach Peter Hughes. The Hokies knocked off VMI on Wednesday but were swept at home by the Virginia Cavaliers. They have had some pitching problems this season as the staff has the second highest ERA in the conference at 5.94 which is only behind the BC Eagles. Adam Redd is the top pitcher with a 2-2 record and ERA of 2.89. Sean O'Brien is the top hitter for the Hokies with a .345 average while driving in 18 runs. Nate Parks has become a pest on the base paths as he has 24 stolen bases in 28 attempts.

Duke at Virginia

The Duke Blue Devils head to Charlottesville for an ACC series with the Virginia Cavaliers. The Blue Devils started the season with a 15-1 record but have struggled since then by losing 11 out of the next 17 to have an overall record of 21-11 but 2-10 in the ACC. The Blue Devils knocked off previously number 1 ranked Florida State behind top pitcher Tony Bajoczky. The Blue Devils are young and talented so the Cavaliers better take them seriously. The Cavaliers lost on Wednesday night at VMI but enter with a solid 27-6 record and tied for first place in the coastal division with an 8-4 mark. Jacob Thompson has become the ace of the staff with a 7-0 record and an ERA of 1.75. He is the leading candidate for ACC Pitcher of the Year if he can continue these numbers. The top hitter is Brandon Guyer who is hitting an outstanding .443 on the season.

The Virginia Cavaliers will take two out of three games according to The College Baseball Blog.

Georgia Tech at Miami

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets enter Coral Gables with a very respectable 20-11 mark and tied for first place in the Coastal Division of the ACC at 8-4. The Yellow Jackets pitching is still suspect with David Duncan leading the staff with a 4-2 record and 3.54 ERA. The Yellow Jackets offense is still loaded with Danny Payne hitting .409 in the leadoff role and Matt Wieters continuing his great career with a .325 average and six homers on the season.

Miami is coming in with a 18-13 record and only 5-7 in the ACC. The Hurricanes have played some of the top teams in the ACC early in the season thus the reason for the slow start. They will start playing some easier games in the coming weeks to get themselves eligible for the conference tournament. Eric Erickson has been far the best pitcher on the staff with a solid 4-3 record and a minuscule ERA of 1.96. Yonder Alonso leads the team in batting average at a .383 clip.

Wake Forest at Maryland

Wake Forest and Maryland both enter this must win series looking to knock each other farther back from the eighth spot in the ACC standings. Wake Forest enters with an overall record of 15-16 and 4-8 in the ACC. They have had some starting pitching struggles with a staff ERA of 5.26. They are led by All-American candidate Allan Dykstra who leads the team with 12 homers. Wake Forest will be without Willy Fox who is out with a leg injury.

Maryland enters with a record of 19-12 and 5-7 in the ACC. They have been receiving great play from Freshman AJ Casario who leads the team in hitting at .327. The top pitcher in the rotation for the Terps has been Ryan Moorer who is 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA.

Texas takes game one of series at Kansas, 11-6!

No. 7 Texas used a five-run eighth inning to break away from Kansas and post an 11-6 win in Big 12 Conference baseball action Thursday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

Ahead 6-4 entering the top of the eighth, Texas (27-9, 8-2) sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame. Nick Peoples hit a leadoff home run over the wall in left centerfield to start the rally. Russell Moldenhauer hit a pinch-hit double to the gap in left centerfield and Jordan Danks followed with a single to plate pinch runner Michael Demperio. After Chance Wheeless grounded into a fielder's choice to swap places with Danks at first, Kyle Russell hit a triple down the rightfield line to add the third run of the inning. Bradley Suttle hit a sacrifice fly to plate Russell. Preston Clark and Travis Tucker walked setting up an RBI single through the left side of the infield by Josh Prince and Texas left its half of the inning with an 11-4 lead.

Texas pounced on the Jayhawks early with a run in the first inning. Danks drew a walk to start the inning. Wheeless grounded into a fielder's choice to take Danks spot at first base, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Suttle through the left side of the infield.

Kansas (17-19, 3-7) claimed the lead in the bottom half of the second. After an infield single by Erik Morrison, Ryne Price was hit by a pitch and Buck Alenir hit a two-run double down the leftfield line, staking Kansas to a 2-1 lead.

Texas regained the lead with two runs in the top of the third. With one out, Wheeless doubled off the wall in right centerfield. Russell singled to rightfield, plating Wheeless and moved to third on an error by KU's rightfielder Brock Simpson. Suttle drove in Russell with a groundout to third base, giving UT a 3-2 advantage.

The Longhorns tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth. Wheeless hit a leadoff double down the rightfield line. With one out, Suttle drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Clark plated Wheeless with a double to leftfield and Tucker pushed Suttle across with a groundout, inflating the cushion to 5-2.

Kansas shaved a pair of runs off the lead with a two-run home run by Brock Simpson over the wall in right centerfield, trimming the Texas lead to 5-4.

In the sixth inning, Peoples hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chais Fuller and scored on a single to rightfield by Danks, pushing the lead to 6-4.

Kansas made a late charge with two runs in the bottom of the eighth scoring on sacrifice flies by Ryne Price and Alenir.

Wheeless went 2-for-6 with four runs scored and two doubles. It marked the fourth time on the season and the second consecutive game that Wheeless logged two doubles in a game. Peoples went 3-for-5 with one home run and two runs scored. Suttle drove in three runs giving him seven RBI over the last two games. Russell and Danks each added two hits and two RBI.

Robby Price led Kansas' offense going 2-for-5 with one run scored. Alenir was 1-for-3 with three RBI.

James Russell (7-2) earned the win as he pitched six innings, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Nick Czyz (2-5) was saddled with the loss for Kansas. He allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits and three walks while striking out seven over six innings.

Texas and Kansas return Hoglund Park for game two of the series Friday at 3 p.m.

BC-UNC series postponed

Boston College and North Carolina were scheduled to start their three game set later this afternoon but they had to postpone the game due to poor field conditions. The Boston area was hit by a snow and ice storm on Wednesday evening. The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.

Turchin Stadium Update

The Tulane Green Wave Athletic Department has announced that Turchin Stadium will not be completed by the end of the 2007 season. This forces the Green Wave to play all their remaining home games at Zephyr Field home of the New Orleans Zephyrs. The 2007 Conference USA Tournament was scheduled to be played at Turchin Stadium thus the conference needs to look for a new home. Ole Miss expanding stadium

The Ole Miss Baseball Program has set plans in motion to expand Oxford-University Stadium to a seating capacity of 10,000. Head Coach Mike Bianco believes the upgraded facility will help with atmosphere and recruiting. The full article is available here.

UNC heads to Boston College

The North Carolina Tar Heels will head to Boston College for an odd Thursday and Saturday series with the Eagles. The Tar Heels are coming off a 14-2 victory over UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday while the Eagles enter the games after beating local rival Northeastern also on Tuesday.

North Carolina is led by Robert Woodard who is an outstanding 29-3 in his career. This season he is a perfect 6-0 with an ERA of 2.17. He will be pitching against Boston College on Friday which is the only ACC team he has not defeated. He faced the Eagles in 2006 but only lasted four innings while giving up a run on three hits. Freshman Dustin Ackley leads a potent UNC offense as he currently holds a 23 game hitting streak entering Game 1 on Thursday. Ackley is hitting for the season at a .479 clip. He has also hit five homers and driven in 45 runs. He is not the only offensive threat for the 2006 CWS finalist as Tim Federowicz and Chad Flack are among many that return from last year's team.

Boston College is currently on a six game ACC losing streak with consecutive sweeps at the hands of FSU and NC State. The Eagles pitching has been poor as they have a staff ERA in the ACC of 6.04. The Eagles have no pitching this year as they have moved Kevin Boggan from the closer role to the number 2 starter position. He gave up 10 runs in his last start against NC State in 4.2 innings. The Eagles will send Nate Jeanes to the mound this weekend as he went seven strong innings in relief last Saturday against NC State while giving up three earned runs. The third starter's spot is still not announced but I expect Terry Doyle will take the ball and try to regain his composure he showed this past summer in the Cape Cod League. The Eagles leading hitter is punter/outfielder Johnny Ayers who is hitting .346 on the season. Tony Sanchez has been a pleasant surprise with a .333 average.

The College Baseball Blog might attend the doubleheader on Saturday if the weather cooperates and if I can handle the cold of Massachusetts that is hitting this weekend. I predict that the BC Eagles get swept by North Carolina.

JMU shuts down Radford

The James Madison pitching staff combined on allowing seven hits in a 3-1 victory over Radford. Allie Swanson got the victory by working the first three innings while allowing only a run. His record now is 1-3 on the season and Josh Hammonds picked up the loss for Radford to drop his record to 0-1. Joe Lake led James Madison's offense by going 2-4 with two runs scored.

College of Charleston shuts down The Citadel

Jake Goldberg threw a complete game shutout for the College of Charleston as they knocked off The Citadel Bulldogs by a 7-0 score. Goldberg allowed five hits and two walks in the shutout victory. Stuart Haywood went 3-4 with two runs driven in and a run scored. This game was played with wood bats as it was the annual "Turn Back the Century" Game.

Bama wins a pitching duel over UAB 2-1

Alabama starter Casey Kebodeaux pitched eight innings while only letting up one run on five hits and was followed by Tommy Hunter who struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning to get hsi fourth save of the year. Alabama grabbed the lead on a sacrifice bunt by Greg Paiml that brought home Ryan Rhoden with the eventual winning run. Alabama will return to action when they visit Vanderbilt while UAB heads to Houston.
