DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its
tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 10th year with its 2007 weekly
surveys. Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 12-June 26 following the
NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The poll voters come from 32 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. This week's poll has representation by 12 different conferences among the 293 baseball-playing schools in the '07 NCAA Division I ranks, and 17 leagues have had teams in the polls in '07. Texas completes sweep of Texas Tech!

The Texas Longhorns won on Sunday.

They swept a series.

They did it in a come-from-behind fashion.

All those things haven't happened very often this season.

With so many positives in Sunday's 4-2 Big 12 win over Texas Tech, the biggest one for Texas (31-10, 12-3) might have been overlooked: Joseph Krebs.

Texas' Sunday starter put his best outing of the season together with a two-run, five-hit performance over six innings. It was the first time Krebs pitched more than five innings this season. And he did it with a smile.

In the fifth inning, Texas Tech (22-15, 5-8) had taken a 2-1 lead on Krebs, and a runner on first was jumping around, bothering the left-handed starter.

"(Pitching coach Skip) Johnson just came out there and slowed me down," Krebs said. "I would throw over to first, and Chance (Wheeless) would throw it back. Right as Chance would throw it back, the guy would jump off first. Coach Johnson told Chance to fake the throw and tag the guy.

"It calmed me down a lot. I started thinking about that. I had a little smile on my face the rest of the outing."

Krebs struck out the next two guys and breezed through the sixth inning.

"Joe turned it around for two more innings," Texas coach Augie Garrido said. "He broke through and took it to another level."

Then the Horns broke through.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Travis Tucker walked and stole second and third base. After shortstop Michael Demperio grounded out, leadoff hitter Jordan Danks, who went 3 for 4, came up with his second RBI of the game, shortening up his swing with two strikes and hitting a single to center field.

"Tucker gets on base, steals second and steals third, and that pumps the rest of us up," Danks said. "You get the adrenaline flowing. You get the crowd behind you, and you just get going."

Kyle Russell, who did not hit a home run this series and remains tied for the Longhorns' single-season home run total with Jeff Ontiveros at 20, followed up with an RBI double, giving Texas a 3-2 lead. Russell advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Wheeless, whose 17-game hitting streak came to an end.

That was plenty of runs as Randy Boone earned the win with three perfect innings.

He did get a little help from Russell, who made a great catch on what appeared to be a double down the right-field line.

"They swung at a lot of pitches early in the count. It was kind of surprising," Boone said. "I got a lot of ground balls and Kyle made a great play in right."

The sweep helped Texas keep a firm hold on first place in the Big 12, and it comes at the perfect time. The Longhorns now enter the toughest part of their schedule, traveling to Rice on Tuesday before heading to Nebraska and Oklahoma State the next two weekends.

Conference USA recap for April 13-15

Rain was the big winner this past weekend, as several series had to work its way around the wet stuff. Highlighting the on-the-field action was Rice's victory in the Silver Glove series.

No. 5 Rice at Houston
Houston posted three runs in the sixth inning against NCBWA Pitcher of the Week Ryan Berry on its way to a 5-2 victory in the Silver Glove series-opener Friday. Joe Savery went 4-for-4 from the plate on Saturday to highlight Rice's 15-hit performance and Ryne Tracker scattered three hits from the mound as the Owls evened the series with a 12-0 shellacking. Jess Buenger went 4-for-5 to lead the Owls to an 11-6 decision on Sunday.

With consecutive wins over UH on Saturday and Sunday, Rice (29-11, 10-2) claimed the weekend series two-games-to-one and retained possession of the Silver Glove Trophy as the city's collegiate champion for a seventh-straight year. The Owls have won the annual trophy in nine of the 10 years it has been awarded dating back to 1998. Houston fell to 19-6 overall, 6-3 in C-USA play.

No. 28 Tulane at Southern Miss
Southern Miss scored in the bottom of the first, then saw Tulane plate five unanswered runs as the Green Wave claimed a 7-5 decision in the Friday contest. Torrential rains and tornado warnings cancelled all of Saturday's EagleFest activities, leading to a pair of seven-inning games on Sunday.

Barry Bowden tossed a complete game as Southern Miss took a 5-2 win in the first game of the Sunday doubleheader. The Green Wave scored seven runs in the top of the first and cruised to a 7-1 series-clinching win in the second game. Tulane moved to 27-11 overall, 8-4 in C-USA; Southern Miss is now 22-15, 4-8 in C-USA.

Memphis at UAB
Visiting Memphis held off a late UAB rally to take a 7-6 win on Friday. Blazer officials set Saturday's first pitch for 10:30 a.m. in an effort to beat the incoming storms. It didn't work; the game was suspended after five innings with Memphis holding an 8-4 lead, thanks to an eight-run fourth inning by the Tigers.

The Blazers scored three runs on Sunday in the resumption of Saturday's game, but Memphis' eight-run fourth inning on the previous day held up, as the Tigers claimed an 8-7 decision. A 9-4 final in the third game gave the Tigers a sweep of the weekend series. Memphis has won eight of its last nine conference games and stands at 22-14 overall, 8-4 in C-USA. UAB fell to 16-21 overall, 4-5 in league play.

East Carolina at Marshall
In an effort to beat the incoming weather, the ECU-MU schedule was altered; the two teams played a Friday doubleheader. Freshman Kyle Roller hit his first career home run in the eighth inning of the opener to lift ECU past Marshall 7-4. The Pirates scored seven runs in the third of the nightcap to cruise to a 13-3 sweep of the doubleheader.

The doubleheader sweep turned into a series sweep, as the rains came in and forced the cancellation of the third game. East Carolina moved to 24-12 overall, 6-5 in C-USA. Marshall fell to 14-19 overall, 0-8 in league play.

ACC Recap for April 15th

Florida State 8 Virginia Tech 5

Ryan Strauss pitched seven strong innings to pick up his eighth straight victory to start the season as his Seminoles knocked off the Hokies 8-5. The Seminoles bullpen gave up four runs over the final two innings but the Noles held off the late charge. Mark Gildea led the offense by going 3-5 with 2 RBI. FSU will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Florida while VT hosts William & Mary also on Wednesday.

Clemson 5 Wake Forest 4

Wake Forest put the typing run on second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth when the rain came down in buckets thus calling the game after 8.1 innings. Ryan Hinson gets the win for the Tigers by giving a solid start for the Tigers. He went seven innings while only giving up two runs. The Tigers offense was led by Andy D'Alessio went 3-4 with three RBIs. The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday when they go to South Carolina while Wake heads to High Point.

NC State 19 Miami 9

Jones in honor of Jackie Robinson wore the number 42 in remembrance of Jackie Robinson and had one of the best days of his career. Marcus Jones went 4 for 6 with 3 RBIs to lead the Wolfpack to the blow out victory over the Miami Hurricanes. Jimmy Gillheeney started for the Wolfpack but was roughed up for five runs in his first two innings. Andrew Taylor ended up getting the win in relief by going 3.1 innings without allowing a run. John Housey started for Miami but let up three runs in his only inning of work. NC State will be back in action on Wednesday when they play Davidson while Miami hosts North Florida.

GT at Virginia (CCD)

Virginia and Georgia Tech canceled the final game of their series do to the large rain event in the northeast. I am still wondering why the teams didn't play a doubleheader on Friday or Saturday. Virginia will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Richmond while GT will play Wednesday against Georgia.

Texas gets two wins over Red Raiders!

It was the quickest two wins Texas will ever get.

First Randy Boone struck out Texas Tech's Geoff Byrns, recording the only out the Longhorns needed Saturday to complete a 7-2 victory, in a game that was suspended in the ninth inning Friday due to inclement weather.

Then, in Game 2 of their three-game series with the Red Raiders at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the Longhorns scored five runs in the first inning.

That contest was all but over, as the Horns (30-10 overall, 11-3 Big 12) cruised to a 10-1 victory.

"Early in the year we jumped out a couple of times and lost the momentum, but we learned from that," Texas coach Augie Garrido said. "We are not forgetting the lessons we learned from some of the adversity we faced."

Texas' early lead was plenty for Adrian Alaniz, who returned to form after a rough outing in Kansas, giving up one run on three hits in seven innings.

"We didn't have a chance today," Texas Tech coach Larry Hays said. "They got a big home run in the first inning, we misplayed a couple balls in the outfield and their guy pitched extremely well."

Alaniz fought gusting winds and chilly temperatures to improve his record to 9-2.

"Last week really helped me a lot," Alaniz said of his struggles. "I just kind of put that behind me today and just went out and pitched. I really wasn't affected by the weather."

Chance Wheeless continued his impressive season by recording a hit for the 17th straight game, the eighth-best streak in Texas history. The Longhorns first baseman did it in style, too, stepping up to the plate in the first inning and ripping a two-run home run over the right-field fence to give Texas a 3-0 lead.

"I didn't think anybody would hit home runs today with the wind, but I knew that one was gone right off the bat," said Wheeless, who went 2 for 3.

After Wheeless' blast, third baseman Bradley Suttle hit a single and catcher Preston Clark, who was 3 for 5 with an RBI, reached on an error. Two batters later, Russell Moldenhauer's two-run single gave Texas a 5-0 lead with just one out in the first, knocking Texas Tech left-hander Josh Scofield out of the game.

Garrido wasn't surprised at his team's success.

"Teams don't recognize — and I don't care if they know it — but everybody sees our lineup and starts left-handed pitchers against us," Garrido said. "We're hitting 50 points higher against left-handed pitchers than we are against right-handed pitchers."

Maybe the Horns have their work cut out for themselves today, as Texas Tech (22-15, 5-8) sends righty Travis Young to the mound to face Texas' Joseph Krebs.

The CBB checks in on Harvard/Yale

The College Baseball Blog had the chance to visit Cambridge MA on Saturday to take in some Ivy League Baseball action between the Harvard Crimson and Yale Bulldogs. The Crimson took both games of the doubleheader.

In Game 1, They received a very solid pitching performance from freshman Max Perlman who pitched a complete game allowing only three hits and a home run to Justin Ankney who crushed the first pitch of the sixth inning over the right field fence. The Crimson took advantage of five errors by the Bulldog defense including one by Dan Soltman and Ryan Lavarnway.

In Game 2, Shawn Haviland started for the Crimson and gave them eight shutout innings while only giving up seven hits. Jake Bruton pitched a perfect ninth to close out the doubleheader sweep. The Crimson offense was led by Matt Vance who went 2-4 with 3 RBIs. Yale starter Chris Wietlispach only lasted four innings while giving up all six runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks. The Yale defense did not back him up at all as Dan Soltman and Ryan Lavarnway each committed two errors in the nightcap.

The CBB was impressed with the level of pitching from the Harvard Crimson. They were able to throw a freshman in game 1 of the doubleheader and he was unhittable. The Bulldogs were off balance throughout the game. Steffan Wilson who plays third base for Harvard is a definite MLB prospect as he has all the tools scouts are looking for in an athlete. He made an excellent play on defense in which he charged a ball and threw out the runner by about three steps. The Harvard coaching staff also took advantage of many situations which arose in the game. They used a double steal (1st and 2nd) with two outs and an 0-2 count on the hitter which ended up getting the Crimson an extra run.

The College Baseball Blog might head down to Brown next weekend to see the battle for the Red Rolfe Division lead.

Army sweeps Holy Cross

The Army Cadets swept a doubleheader from Holy Cross on Saturday in West Point NY. Nick Hill pitched 6.0 shutout innings while only allowing three hits and Milan Dinga pitched a perfect seventh inning to give the Cadets the 3-0 victory. In Game 2, Army scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth with a key two-out two-run triple from Chris Simmons to tie the game up. Simmons then came through in the bottom of the tenth with a single to drive home the winning run.

The Citadel knocks off ASU

The Citadel Bulldogs picked up an 8-5 victory over Appalachian State to get a series victory. The Bulldogs were led by Matt Arnold who went 3-3 with two RBI's. David Rubinstein of ASU had a perfect day at the plate with a hit in each of his four at-bats. Matt Reifsnider pitched three innings in relief to get his second win of the season. Link Saunders got his fifth save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth while striking out two batters. Zach Quate got the loss by giving up two runs in 1/3 of an inning.

ACC Recap for 4/14

Game 1: Duke 9 UNC 3

The Duke Blue Devils got another strong start from Tony Bajoczky who picked up his seventh victory on the season by working eight innings while only giving up three runs (two earned) to lead his team to the 9-3 victory. North Carolina starter Alex White was knocked around for six runs in 2.2 innings. His record drops to 4-2 on the season. Nate Freiman went 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored to led the Blue Devil attack. Josh Horton and Tim Fedroff each went 2-4 in the losing effort for the Tar Heels.

Game 2: UNC 7 Duke 4

Josh Horton led the North Carolina Tar Heels to a 7-4 victory with a homer and two RBIs. Adam Warren started for the Tar Heels and pitched five strong innings while giving up two runs to up his record to 7-0 on the season. Michael Ness got the loss in relief by pitching two innings and giving up five runs.

Brandon Reichert broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in the winning run to give the Seminoles the 4-3 victory. Noles reliever Brian Chambers got the victory by working two innings and giving up only one run. His record goes to 2-0 on the season. Danny Rosen pitched a perfect ninth inning to get his fifth save of the season. Scott Stoehr gave up one run in 2.1 innings of action to drop his record to 1-3.

Virginia 7 GT 6

David Adams hit a three run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cavs a walkoff victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon. Danny Payne entered the ninth inning with a 6-4 lead and promptly got the first two outs when he ran into some trouble. He proceeded to walk Sean Doolittle and then hit Brandon Guyer with the next pitch to set up a second and first situation. David Adams then promptly put the fourth pitch of his at bat over the left field wall to give the Cavs the victory. Danny Payne gets the loss for the second consecutive Saturday so his record drops to 0-2. Virginia reliever Pat McAnaney grabs the win to get his record at 2-0 on the season.

Wake Forest 6 Clemson 5

Brett Linnenkohl hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to drive in Tyler Smith with the winning run to lead the Deacons to a 6-5 victory over the Clemson Tigers. The victory snaps a 17 game losing streak for Wake Forest against Clemson. Eric Niesen of WF picks up his fourth win of the year while Clemson reliever Alan Farina drops his record to 2-1.

Miami 5 NC State 1

Enrique Garcia pitched a complete game and received home runs from Dennis Raben and Blake Tekotte to lead the Hurricanes to a 5-1 victory over NC State. Andrew Brackman started for NC State and went seven innings while giving up five runs on ten hits. Jeremy Synan provided a 2-4 game to led the Pack offense.

Boston College 18 Maryland 6

Boston College blew open a tight game by scoring a total of ten runs in the fifth and sixth inning to lead the Eagles to a 18-6 victory. Peter Frates led the offense by hitting two homers and drove in eight runs. Ted Ratliff got the win by pitching 2.1 shutout innings while only allowing a single hit. His record is now 3-1. Kevin Biringer got the loss by giving up three runs in the two innings of work. Biringer's record drops to 2-7.

The Citadel splits with ASU

The Citadel and Appalachian State split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. In Game 1, Appalachian State scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to knock off the Bulldogs 9-7. Garrett Sherrill picked up the win for the Mountaineers by working the final 2.0 innings to send his record to 7-3. Justin Smith picked up the loss for the Bulldogs by letting up five runs in 1.1 innings to send his record to 4-3.

The second game of the doubleheader was a 17-0 victory for The Citadel. They used a complete game shutout by Matt Crim who allowed nine hits and one walk while striking out seven batters to get his record to 4-2 on the season. Zach Brown led the offense by hitting two homers in the game. Appalachian State starter Jason Rook pitched 5.0 innings while surrendering six runs to drop his record to 4-5.

ACC Recap for 4/13

Florida State 14 Va Tech 1

Bryan Henry pitched six shutout innings while only allowing two hits and a walk while striking out nine batters to lead the Noles to the 14-1 blowout victory. The Seminoles offensive leader was Jason Stidham who went 3-4 with a homer, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Peter Hughes left starter Greg Fryman in the game by letting him pitch 5.2 innings while giving up 14 runs (13 earned) on 15 hits. The teams will be back in action on Saturday for Game 2 of the series.

UNC 7 Duke 0

Robert Woodard picked up his 30th career victory to tie Michael Hogg's school record for career wins. Woodard pitched nine shutout innings while giving up nine hits and walking only one Blue Devil batter. His record heads to 7-0 on the season. Chad Flack is starting to find his stroke again as he went 2-4 with a homer, two runs scored, and an RBI. Alexander Hassan started for Duke and pitched five innings while giving up five runs. His record drops to 2-3 in his freshman season. Tim Sherlock and Ryan McCurdy each had two hits to lead the Blue Devils offense.

Georgia Tech 2 UVA 1 (11 innings)

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets won a pitching duel with the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday with a 2-1 victory. Jeff Ussery laid down a suicide bunt with one out in the 11th inning to drive home Patrick Long with the winning run. Jacob Thompson started for the Cavaliers and went 7.2 innings while giving up one unearned runs on six hits. Jake Rule ended up getting the loss for the Cavs by giving up three hits and a run in the 11th inning. His record drops to 2-3. David Duncan started for Georgia Tech and went seven innings while giving up one run on six hits and two walks. Jared Hyatt pitched four hitless innings to up his record to 6-0.

Clemson 6 Wake Forest 2

The Clemson Tigers got s very strong start from Daniel Moskos who went six strong innings in his second career start while only giving up a single run. His record goes to 3-2 on the season. The Clemson offense was led by Wilson Boyd and Brad Chaulk who each had three hits in the game. Wake Forest starter Brad Kledzik also pitched 6.0 innings but gave up four runs on ten hits. Kledzik's record goes to 3-3. Michael Murray hit a solo homer in the game to lead the Deacons offense.

NC State 5 Miami 3

Vince Gutierrez scored the go-ahead run after two bad throws on a pickoff play allowed him to score and Joe Florio hit a two-out single to drive in another run to lead the Wolfpack to the 5-3 victory. Jeff Stallings got the win by working the final two innings without allowing a run. Alex Koronis got the loss for the Hurricanes by working 1.2 innings while letting up two runs on no hits but two walks. Caleb Mangum led the Pack offense by going 1-5 with a two run homer in the 3rd inning. Yonder Alonso and Dennis Raben each had three hits in the losing effort.

Game 1: Boston College 5 Maryland 3
Game 2: Maryland 7 Boston College 4

The Boston College Eagles and Maryland Terrapins split a doubleheader on Friday as the teams decided to play a doubleheader due to the impeding weather heading into the Maryland area on Sunday. Boston College received stellar starting pitching in Game 1 as Kevin Boggan pitched eight strong innings while only giving up two hits and one run. He handed the ball over to Geoff Oxley who got into some trouble in his 0.2 innings of work. The score was 5-3 with the winning run up to bat in Chad Durakis but Terry Doyle picked off Mike Murphy to end the game. Boggan ups his record to 3-4 and Doyle picked up his third save. In Game 2, Boston College received another strong outing from Nate Jeanes who pitched seven strong innings while giving up three runs (two earned). He was relieved again by Terry Doyle but this time he wasn't' as successful. Doyle entered the game with a tight 4-3 lead. The first batter he faced was Dan Melvin who hit a home run to left field to tie the game up. After the Terps were done knocking Doyle around he had given up four runs on five hits and two walks. Brett Cecil shut down the Eagles bats over the last five outs in the game to get the win to up his record to 4-3 while Doyle's record goes to 2-3.

Friday Big East Round-Up

• Villanova 3, South Florida 2(10) (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.)-Wildcats starter Mike Loree went 9 innings throwing an amazing 160 pitches givings up 2 runs on 9 hits and striking out 6. USF starter Danny Otero also went all 9 giving up 2 unearned runs of 6 hits and ringing up 8. But it all came down to the bottom of the 10th with the game tied at 2 when Villanova junior Dan Terpak steped up to the plate and singled in Sophomore Joe Cotter who was on third.

• Louisville 6, Connecticut 2 (Storrs, Conn.)-The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and never looked back. Louisville starter Zack Pitts went all the way giving up 2 runs (1 earned) and striking out 7. UConn could never really get any offense going Larry Day was the only bright spot going 1-2 with a RBI.

• Rutgers 13, Seton Hall 9 (Piscataway, N.J.)-Rutgers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead after the first three innings but the lead was quickly earsed by a Seton Hall 7 run 4th inning, but Rutgers quickly answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the same inning. Rutgers was led by Right Fielder Dave Williams 3 hits and 3 RBIs.

CBB visits for April 14th and 15th

The College Baseball Blog will be making the trip down to Kingston RI to check in on the Charlotte 49ers and Rhode Island Rams on Saturday. The 49ers enter the weekend ranked as the 25th team in the country by the NCBWA. The 49ers have an overall record of 26-6 and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10. The 49ers weekend starters all have ERA's under 2.66.

The CBB will try to head to Cambridge on Sunday (weather permitting) to take in the Harvard-Yale doubleheader which is a key Red Rolfe Division showdown in the Ivy League Conference. The Crimson have a 5-3 record in the conference while Yale is 3-5. Both teams are looking to pick up some key wins hoping to get into the Ivy League Championship series at the end of the year.

The Citadel-Appalachian State Update

The Citadel Bulldogs have made a change to their schedule for their upcoming weekend series with Appalachian State. They will play a doubleheader on Friday that starts at 2 pm and a single game on Saturday at 1pm but could start at noon to try to beat the bad weather that is coming late Saturday into Sunday this weekend.

Holy Cross to honor 1952 team

The Holy Cross Athletic Department will honor the 1952 National Championship team in a ceremony between games of their doubleheader with Bucknell on April 21st. They will raise a championship banner and celebrate the victory over Missouri on June 17, 1952 that clinched the title for the Crusaders.

ACC Weekend Preview for April 13th-15th

Duke at UNC

The Duke Blue Devils head down the road to visit the Tar Heels for a Coastal Division showdown. The Tar Heels are leading the Division with an 11-4 record in the conference while Duke is pulling up the rear with a paltry 3-12. The Tar Heels swept Boston College last weekend in a fairly easy fashion behind strong pitching and solid hitting. UNC knocked off the Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday by a score of 6-3 and had their Wednesday game with Elon postponed due to rain. The Tar Heels are led by Freshman All-American candidate Dustin Ackley who is hitting an outstanding .489 on the season. Robert Woodard has continued his dominance on the mound despite last week's poor performance with his 6-0 record. Duke took one game last weekend from Virginia and had a mid-week game with Davidson postponed by rain. Duke is led by Jimmy Gallagher who is hitting .368 on the season. Tony Bajoczky has become the ace of the staff with victories over Virginia and Florida State the last two weekends. The CBB predicts that UNC takes all three games on the weekend.

Virginia Tech at Florida State

Peter Hughes leads his Virginia Tech Hokies into Dick Howser Stadium for an ACC series this weekend. Va Tech has an overall record of 17-17 but 4-11 in the ACC. The Hokies were swept last weekend by Clemson but picked up a victory over Richmond on Tuesday. The Hokies have been led by Sean O'Brien who has continued his strong start with a .349 average. Florida State enters with a very good record of 32-4 and 10-2 in the ACC. Florida State picked up a non-conference win over Jacksonville 7-2 on Tuesday and are coming off taking two out of three with NC State last weekend. Tony Thomas Jr. has continued hitting the ball well at a .493 average as he has become the toughest out in the ACC. The Seminoles weekend starters have only lost two games this season. The CBB predicts that FSU sweeps the Hokies.

Georgia Tech at Virginia

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers this weekend. This will be one of the big ACC Matchups on the season because both teams are expected to make the NCAA tournament this season. Georgia Tech has an overall record of 21-13 and 9-6 in the ACC while Virginia enters with a 30-7 overall record and 10-5 in the ACC. Georgia Tech is led by MLB prospects Matt Wieters and Danny Payne. Both players have seen time in the field and on the mound this year. Payne ended up getting his first loss of the season last Saturday against Miami by giving up a three run homer to Mark Sobolewski. Payne has an ERA of 2.79 in eight appearances this year. Payne is also leading the team in hitting at a .381 clip. Matt Wieters enters the weekend with a .336 average with seven homers. He has struggled out of the bullpen where he is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA. Virginia has been playing good baseball with tons of excellent pitching coming from Jacob Thompson who has an earned run average of 1.49 in his nine starts. The Cavaliers offense has been led by the two headed monster of Brandon Guyer who is hitting .435 and Greg Miclat who is hitting an even .400. The CBB predicts that UVA takes two out of three games.

Clemson at Wake Forest

The Clemson Tigers take their 23-9 overall record and 8-4 record in the ACC up to Winston Salem to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons who have been struggling this season with an overall record of 20-16 and 7-8 in the ACC. The Tigers are led by Brad Chaulk who is hitting .393 on the season. Daniel Moskos is going to be making his second start of the season and his career this weekend as he is making the transition from Closer to Starter in the middle of the season. He lasted only four innings against Va Tech last weekend but the game was suspended due to snow on the field until Saturday. Wake Forest is led by All-American candidate Allan Dykstra who leads the team with 13 homers and an average of .349. The CBB predicts that Clemson Tigers will sweep the series.

NC State at Miami

The NC State Wolfpack head down to Coral Gables to take on the Miami Hurricanes in a weekend series. The Wolfpack carry a record of 24-10 and 9-6 in the ACC. NC State lost two out of three games against FSU last weekend. They are led by Mike Roskopf who is hitting .436 in his last ten games. Caleb Mangum leads the team in hitting with a .333 average. Jimmy Gilheeney has been a pleasant surprise for the Wolfpack with his 3-1 record and 2.45 ERA in his freshman campaign. The Hurricanes have been playing better baseball lately as their record has gone up to 21-14 and 7-8 in the conference. Yonder Alonso leads the Canes offense with his solid .367 average. Eric Erickson is not scheduled to pitch this weekend as he got injured in warm-ups last weekend and his status is still up in the air. The CBB predicts that Miami takes 2 out of 3 games.

Boston College at Maryland

Both schools are looking to pick up some big ACC wins in their hunts to get to the ACC Tournament. BC enters the series with an overall record of 10-20-1 and 4-11 in the ACC. Boston College currently is on a nine game losing streak in the ACC but picked up a non-conference win over Harvard on Wednesday. Maryland has a 19-16 record and 5-10 record. Boston College has been led by freshman Tony Sanchez who is hitting at a .336 clip. Johnny Ayers is still questionable after hurting his shoulder a few weeks ago. Maryland is currently on a five game losing streak after losing a non-conference contest on Wednesday to Old Dominion 4-2. Maryland freshman AJ Casario leads the team in batting average at .333. Maryland closer Brett Cecil has seven saves on the season with a 3.50 ERA. The CBB predicts that BC takes 2 out of 3 games in the series.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss starting pitcher Mike Cashion pitched five innings, giving up one run on six hits, Michael Ewing hit a two-run single in the second inning and Trey Cuevas hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead the Golden Eagles to a 4-2 win over No. 13 Ole Miss at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 5,132.

Cashion (1-0) earned his first win since defeating Memphis on April 1, 2005, before sustaining a season-ending elbow injury the next week at East Carolina. He threw 86 pitches, walked three batters and struck out one. Jared Cavenaugh pitched two innings of relief, giving up one hit, two walks and struck out three batters. Tyler Conn (4) earned his fourth save of the season, giving up one unearned run on two hits and struck out one batter.

Ole Miss starter Brett Buckvich (4-2) was credited with the loss, pitching three innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, walking four and striking out three batters. Four Rebel pitchers walked eight batters and struck out five.

Southern Miss (21-13) scored four runs on five hits and committed one error, while Ole Miss (24-11) scored two runs on nine hits. The Rebels left 12 runners stranded and the Golden Eagles left 10 runners on base.

Southern Miss hosts Conference USA foe Tulane as part of EagleFest Weekend on April 13-15 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Ole Miss will travel to Baton Rouge to face LSU in Southeastern Conference action.

Tulane 5, Louisiana 4

METAIRIE, La. - Junior second baseman Brad Emaus and sophomore right fielder Warren McFadden had three hits apiece and the pair combined to provide the game's winning run as the Tulane University baseball team used the come-back attack to defeat Louisiana, 5-4, Wednesday evening at Zephyr Field.

The Ragin' Cajuns jumped on Tulane starter Matt Goebel for four runs in the top of the second, but the senior right-hander settled down to pitch four shutout innings the rest of his outing. The Green Wave offense, meanwhile, plated single runs in the second and fourth innings, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to pull out the victory.

With the win, Tulane improves to 25-10 on the year and is now 7-4 against teams from the state of Louisiana in 2007. Louisiana, meanwhile, falls to 26-8. The Green Wave travel to Southern Miss for a C-USA series this weekend, while the Ragin' Cajuns hit the road to face defending league champion Troy in a Sun Belt series.

Rice 13, Lamar 4

BEAUMONT, Tex. -- Every Rice starter collected a base hit by the fourth inning on the way to a season-high 20 hits, including a grand slam home run by junior first baseman Joe Savery, on the way to a convincing 13-4 road victory over Lamar Wednesday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont.

Rice jumped on the scoreboard for eight early runs. In the first inning junior Tyler Henley knocked a two-out single into left field and was able to score easily on a triple to right-center by Savery. Savery then scored on Jordan Dodson's double to left-center and the Owls had two runs in the first inning of game for the first time since late February.

The Owls improved to 27-10 on the season with the team's eighth win in a row. Lamar fell to 22-15 overall.

The road swing continues for Rice. The Owls next face crosstown rival Houston in a three-game Conference USA weekend series April 13-15 at UH's Cougar Field. Lamar travels to Sam Houston State for a Southland Conference series this weekend.

Murray State 7, Memphis 6

Memphis reliever Will Hudgens struck out a career-high eight batters and held Murray State hitless in five innings of work, but the Tigers were unable to overcome an early 6-2 deficit as they suffered a 7-6 loss to Murray State Wednesday night at Nat Buring Stadium. The loss was just the second of the year for Memphis when playing at home.

Memphis scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but left the tying run stranded on third.

Both teams return to action this weekend with conference series. Memphis (19-14) will travel to Birmingham to face UAB in C-USA action. Murray State (9-21) will host Eastern Kentucky in an OVC series.

East Carolina 3, UNC Wilmington 2

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Ryan Wood's RBI single in the top of the ninth scored Brandon Henderson and gave East Carolina a 3-2 win over in-state rival UNC Wilmington Wednesday night at Brooks Field.

Henderson singled down the left field line with one out and then moved into scoring position on his fourth stolen base of the year, setting up the game-winning hit for the Pirates (22-12).

Shane Mathews picked up his league-leading ninth save after working the ninth inning where he allowed one hit. Josh Ruhlman notched his second win and improved to 2-0 after working 1 2/3 innings where he retired all five batters he faced. Freshman right-hander Mike Anderson tossed a career-best 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits with two punch-outs and one walk before giving way to Mike Flye, who faced one batter, then was replaced by Ruhlman in the seventh.

UNCW (16-20) reliever Allen Flood suffered the loss after working just two-third's of an inning where he allowed the game-winning run on two hits. Starter Andrew Morgan worked a career-best 5 1/3 innings, struck out a career-high five batters, surrendered one run (unearned) on four hits while walking one before giving way to Jessee Haney. Haney came in with runners on the corner in the sixth and got Henderson to ground into an inning ending 1-6-3 double-play. Haney finished the game allowing one run (earned) on one hit in 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. Flood replaced Haney in the ninth before being replaced himself by Larry Salefsky ( 1/3 IP).

The Pirates will stay on the road this weekend when they travel Charleston, WVa. to take on Marshall in a three-game Conference USA series at Appalachian Power Park. UNCW travels to Delaware for a CAA series.

La Salle slides by Penn

Rich Prall hit a two run homer and John Rickards had two hits as they led the Explorers to a 6-3 victory over city rivals Penn. Christian Schulz gave up one run in his two innings of work to get his first win of the year. Bret Wallace got the loss for the Quakers by giving up two runs in 0.1 innings of work. Wallace's record drops to 0-1 on the season. Josh Corn and William Gordon each had a hit and an RBI for the Quakers in the losing effort. No Quaker had multiple hits in the game as they were stymied by the pitching of the Explorers. La Salle will be back in action this weekend when they head to St. Joseph's while Penn travels to Cornell.
