Stretch run has USM feeling fine about future

After a dropping a second consecutive baseball game at Mississippi State in the last week of April, Southern Miss stood on shaky ground, just eight games over .500.

Four weeks later, the Golden Eagles had earned a fifth consecutive postseason invitation.

"A month ago, I don't think anybody gave us a chance to be in a regional, much less a two seed," USM coach Corky Palmer said.

While USM's season ended with two losses in three games at both the Conference USA Tournament and the Oxford Regional, that stretch run of the regular-season left Palmer feeling good about the future of the Golden Eagles' program.

"We've got a lot of good players coming back," Palmer said. "We lost some good seniors, but we're a young team, position-wise especially.

"It's been a learning experience, and we'll be better from it."
